[1] In telecommunication, a router is a network equipment connecting the local network to the Internet and directs data traffic between devices (computers, phones, consoles), acting acts as an info distribution hub.
[1] Routers does the "traffic directing functions" on the Internet, i.e., like air traffic controllers for digital data, since on the internet, infos (emails, videos, webpages) isn't sent as bucks, but are divided into millions of tiny pieces called data packets.
A router is connected to two or more data lines from different IP networks. When a data packet arrives on a line, the router reads the network address in the packet header to determine the ultimate destination. Then, using information in its routing table or routing policy, it directs the packet to the next network on its journey. A data packet is forwarded from one router to another through an internetwork until it reaches its destination node.
Difference of a router and mode Thought both terms are used interchangeably, they aren't the same. A modem is a gateway connecting directly to the Internet service provider (ISP), (cable or fiber provider).
Note: An ISP more specifically refers to companies providing the internet access, to who we pay the internet service for. E.g.. Rogers, Bell, Comast.
A router takes from the modem to allocate and share this connection with all the devices in an area. Today, these 2 functions are often combined in 1 device provided by the ISP.
In another different field (than telecom), in woodcutting, "router" in English refers to a power woodcutting tool used to hollow out, profile or cut wood.
