A duplex communication system is a point-to-point system made of 2+ connected parties/devices that communicate to one another in both directions. They're employed in many communications networks, either to allow simultaneous communication in both directions between 2 connected parties or to provide a reverse path for the monitoring and remote adjustment of equipment in the field. There are 2 types of duplex communication systems: full-duplex (FDX), both directions simultaneously, and half-duplex (HDX), both directions not simultaneously, and at times a 3rd one, the simplex, for one direction only.

In a duplex system, both person can talk and hear simultaneously.
An example of this is a normal phone call, modern switched Ethernet, or many cellular communication systems. Both Person A transmits and B can talk and hear simultaneously.
In a full-duplex system, a person talks at a time. An example of this is a walke-talkie or older Ethernet systems using a shared medium.
Person A transmits and B must wait, never simultaneously.
In a simplex system, communication only occurs in 1 direction. An example of this is traditional TV broadcast, radio station, or some sensors that only transmit measurements.
