The Sahara is also the world’s hottest desert and third biggest. The two above are the Antarctic and the Arctic. Not all deserts are hot. Some are cold, have extreme temperature, can be found on every continents, and occupy about 1/3 of Earth's area.
Dunes behave similarly to ocean waves but in slow-motion. Wind and rain cause the sand surface to ripple. Dunes in China are said to move about 100 meters a year. It is hard to model this flow of sand. Each sand grain can be in contact with 5-9 other grains. How they interact, with millions, makes them complex. Huge moving dunes can easily swallow up cities and roads, which is what happened in the past.
The Garamantes were a civilization from 500 BC to 500 AD in the north Sahara, that built complex irrigation systems to sustain their cities. The fossil water they relied on dried up and their civilization collapsed, ultimately swallowed up by the desert.
