The Lion and the Mouse
A lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws.
A timid little mouse came upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright
and haste to get away, ran across the lion’s nose. Woken from his
nap, the lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.
“Spare me!” begged the poor mouse. “Please let me go and
someday I will surely repay you.”
The lion was so amused at the idea of the little mouse being able
to help the king of the beasts that he lifted up his paw and let her go.
Some weeks later, the lion was caught in a net. The hunters, who
desired to carry the lion alive to their king, tied him to a tree while
they went in search of a wagon to carry him.
Just then the little mouse happened to
pass by and seeing the lion’s sad plight,
went up to him and soon gnawed away the
ropes of the net, freeing the lion.
“You have helped me and now I have returned the favor. Was I
not right—even a mouse can help the lion?” said the little mouse.
Kindness is the key to open doors to someone who is in need
and longing for love and attention. This can be done by saying kind
or comforting words, showing kind actions like a sincere pat on a
shoulder or a smile, offering a seat to a lady or an elder, picking up
something for someone, and many more.
There are many reasons to be kind:
1. When we do something for someone, it makes us feel good
especially when we see him or her smile.
2. The more we help someone, the more we love them. We feel
that we would like to help others more.
3. When we see that the people we help are happy, we feel
happier, and our world becomes brighter.
4. If we are sensitive to the needs of others around us, they will
feel that they have value and importance.
5. They value and appreciate so much the help we give. They
feel that they are not left out because we are there for them.
6. When you do something good for others, you will feel that
there is a hidden hand that is leading you to do good for
others. Once you have started this, you will feel more and
more happy and confident that the urging is coming from God
who teaches us unconditional love.
