Discussion
There are people in our community who help provide services, goods, and products for the needs of the community members. They are called community helpers/workers. Let us study each one of them and learn how they help the people in the community with their needs.
Farmers
Farmers plant rice, corn, sugarcane, fruits, and vegetables. They provide us our food. We should be thankful for them because without farmers, we will have no food to eat.
Farmers also raise swine, poultry, and other farm animals. The meat and
eggs we eat are from these animals.
Fisherfolks
Fisherfolks catch fish, shrimp, squid, crabs, and other seafood and marine resources. We can buy what they catch in wet markets. Some of these marine resources are being manufactured into canned goods.
Tailors and Seamstress
Tailors sew men’s wear like polo, pants, shirts, and shorts. Seamstresses sew women’s wear. They also make curtains, pillowcases, bed sheets, and other linen materials.
Carpenters
Carpenters help in building houses, offices, hospitals, churches, schools, and other structures. They also make furniture like chairs, tables, cabinets, and beds.
Doctors, Dentists, and Nurses
Doctors take care of the health and wellness of the members of the community. They see to it that we are strong and healthy. They conduct medical checkups and cure our illnesses.
Nurses help doctors take care of the sick especially those in the hospitals.
Dentists provide information on dental hygiene. They assist the
community members on how to take care of their teeth.
Teachers
Teachers teach us how to read, write, count, and do other things. They mold us to be good and productive citizens. Without teachers, there will be no doctors, lawyers, nurses, engineers, and other jobs.
Peace Officers
(Police Officers and Barangay Tanod)
Police officers take care of the peace and order in the community. Sometimes, one could see a Police Community Precinct in a barangay. There should be a police visibility in the area so that those who are thinking to do bad things would stop.
Barangay Tanod helps in keeping peace and order in the community.He/She goes around the community especially at night to maintain peace. He/ She catches lawbreakers. Sometimes, he/she helps manage the traffic in busy streets.
Bakers bake bread and other pastries for the people in the community.
Plumbers fix leaking pipes and faucets of houses in the neighborhood.
Drivers serve the people in the community. They bring us to school,
office, church, market, and other places.
10. Firefighters
In instances when fire suddenly breaks out in a community, we need firefighters. The firefighters know the best way to do in putting out fire in the neighborhood.
Garbage Collectors
The community needs the service of garbage collectors. These community helpers are in charge of the household wastes. They also encourage the members of the community to practice waste segregation. There are days that they would only collect biodegradable wastes and some other days when they only collect nonbiodegradable wastes. The households should follow the schedule to avoid being penalized by barangay officials.
Mail Carriers/Postal Carriers
The community still needs the service of the mail carriers/postal carriers even if everyone in the community has access to social media. There are important documents and letters that have to be delivered at home. This is the work of the mail carriers/postal carriers. They go from house to house to deliver the letters or documents personally to the receiver.
Why are these helpers/ workers important in providing the basic services to the people in the community?
All these occupations are important in providing products and services to
the community. The barangay officials/leaders will find it difficult to provide
for the people’s need without them.
