Lesson 1:  Recognizing Sentences and Non-sentences

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

• identify sentences and non-sentences;

• share basic information about myself.

In a piece of paper, write your name, address and contact number.  Below it draw your favorite hobbies.

Listen as your teacher reads the group of words below.  Each student is trying to tell you something about himself/herself.  Can you clearly understand what they are trying to tell you?

GROUP A GROUP B

in Malabon Paulo lives in Malabon

Which group of words can you understand better?  Why?

Group B is composed of sentences.  A sentence must be the following:

• starts with a big or capital letter

• expresses a complete idea or thought

• has two parts: the doer or the one being talked about, and the one that

tells about the first part.

• ends with a punctuation mark such as period (.) or a question mark (?)
