Discussion
A compound word is formed when two words are joined to make a new word.
Kinds of compound words:
open
closed
hyphenated
CLOSED COMPOUND WORDS
Closed compound words are the most recognizable of the three types. These words are created when other smaller words come together to form a new larger word.
For example:
waistcoat railroad postbox
sunflower breakfast
OPEN COMPOUND WORDS
Open compound words are slightly different because they still appear as two words separated by a space. Although open compound words are separated by a space, they are recognized as one word because they form a new meaning.
Examples:
living room full moon real estate
ice cream hot dog house party
HYPHENATED COMPOUND WORDS
written with hyphen between words
Examples
cross-examine cold-shoulder
double-check bottle-feed
dry-clean blow-dry
fast-track spoon-feed
fast-forward spot-check
