Discussion
In some homes, parents have little time to teach their children responsibilities because of pressure from work and other concerns. It is a necessity then to develop and even enforce the skills needed to be responsible children. Which of the following actions show that you are responsible?
Being responsible is doing what must be done
I fix my bedsheet every morning.
I take a bath every day.
I keep my uniform neat and clean. I keep my toys.
I clean the house. I help Mother buy groceries.
I do my homework.
I return books to the shelf.
I throw my trash in the trash can. I feed my dog.
A responsibility is something one must do. At a very young age, a child should be taught the responsibility to
participate in regular chores like asking them to keep their toys after playing, fixing their own beds, keeping their shoes clean, washing their own cups, watering the plants, and many others. It is true that getting children to participate in chores is not easy. They feel that they are still very young to perform a task. Some feel lazy to work on the assigned task. Others feel that they do not know how to do it. It is important that in giving responsibilities to
children, they must be taught how to do them. Teaching the children how to be responsible helps the family work together.
What are the children’s responsibilities? Children have the responsibility to:
1. know and understand the rules and the consequences if they are broken;
2. go to school and perform assigned tasks;
3. do household chores assigned by parents or elders;
4. respect their parents and protect their siblings;
5. respect elders;
6. look after their belongings and respect the properties of others;
7. help the needy and the less fortunate;
8. keep the environment clean;
9. tell or share their problems to their parents;
10. tell their feelings and needs; and
11. protect their rights.
