Discussion
Empathy is how we, as individuals, understand what others feel. It is understanding and reacting to the concerns and needs of others.
Below are examples of how empathy is demonstrated in different
situations.
Princess is a sweet and friendly girl. She is loved and admired by many because she is very sensitive to the needs and feelings of her relatives, classmates, friends, neighbors, and even people she does not know.
My mother saw that my cousin was crying. To comfort my cousin, my
mother embraced him. I also embraced my cousin.
My mother and I saw that our neighbor was sad and crying. We approached her and asked why. We learned that she lost her job. We stayed and listened attentively until she felt better.
My classmate came and told me that he will stop schooling because his father lost his job. I pat his shoulder because I can feel what he feels.
Three children knocked at our door and gave a letter stating that they were victims of Typhoon Dindo. I asked the visitors to enter our house. My mother brought out a box of old clothes, a bag of rice, and some canned goods. I set the table and prepared food for them to eat.
I met a new friend. My best friend introduced her to me. While they were
talking, I heard that she has a problem. I asked her, “What help can I offer?”
Empathy is putting oneself in the other person’s situation.
There are ways in which empathy can be shown:
1. Express how you feel about his or her feelings.
2. Repeat or paraphrase what a person said so he or she will know
you understand how he or she feels. Presence is highly appreciated to let the person feel that you understand his or her thoughts and feelings. Empathy is not only used when someone is in pain. If there are two parties expressing different or opposite desires and opinions, misunderstanding
will happen if they do not talk about it.
How To Show Empathy to Others
1. Listen and focus your attention to the person talking. Give attention not only to the words he or she is saying but how the words are being said.
2. Look at the person’s eyes.
3. Try to understand what the other person is saying.
4. Show the person that you are listening to what he or she is saying.
5. Support one another.
6. Work together to find solutions.
