Mark 4:35-41
Even the Wind and Waves Obey Jesus
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
The wind is an interesting phenomenon of nature...Man says the wind is the movement of air near Earth's surface...Wind can be a gentle breeze or a strong gale and cause us much damage...The most powerful wind happens during storms called tornadoes, cyclones, and hurricanes...Changes in the temperature of air, land, and water causes wind...When air flows over a warm surface, it heats up and rises...Wind then happens...
God controls nature and the temperature changes of the air, land, and sea...His natural law is to have heat rise...So He controls the wind and these differing changes in air temperatures which causes the wind...Years ago God stretched out His Mighty Hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that one night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters of the sea were divided...And then, according to the Bible, the Israelites were free to travel into this divided now dry sea caused by this east wind and they became free from Pharaoh's rule...
Behold, who is He who forms mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what are His thoughts, He who makes dawn into darkness and treads on the high places of the earth, the LORD God of Hosts is His name...So when we look at ships in the oceans and seas, though they are so great and large they are driven by strong winds, they are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires...This small rudder is a most important part of the ship...This rudder steers and leads the ship on its path and journey...Let our life's rudder and the path it takes us follow and trust in the LORD and be driven by Him...Let us ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind...May our rudder hold strong and firm on the windiest of days...
The wind blows where it wishes and when we hear the sound of it, we do not know where it comes from or where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit...And when we see a south wind blowing, we say, ‘It will be a hot day,’ and it normally it turns out that way and is hot and warmer that day...Now when evening came one day, Jesus' Disciples went down to the sea, and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to Capernaum...It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them...The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing...And Jesus was sleepy and He slept on the boat and it was already a long distance from the land, being battered by the waves from the wind; for the wind was contrary that day...Jesus was in the stern, still sleeping on a cushion...The frightened and alarmed Disciples woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”...He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet!...Be still!”...Then the wind died down and it was completely calm...He said to His Disciples, “Why are you so afraid?...Do you still have no faith?”...They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this?...Even the wind and the waves obey Him!”...
And one day shortly before dawn Jesus went out to His Disciples, and was walking on the lake, like it was land...When the Disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified...“It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear...But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I...Don’t be afraid.”...“LORD, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to You on the water.”...“Come,” He said...Then Peter got down out of the boat and tried to walk on the water and he came toward Jesus...But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and doubted...Peter began to sink, cried out, “LORD, save me!”...Immediately Jesus reached out His Hand and caught him...“You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”...And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down...Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”...
