Exodus 20:8-11
God Creates the Week
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Genesis 1:14-16 (KJV)
God Creates the Seasons
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
Matthew 11:28-30
Come to Me and Rest
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Mark 2:23-28
23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
God created many things in the beginning...Some of the things He created are often overlooked...God created the week...And He also created the seasons...This was the basis for the first calendar...God did not need six or seven day to create the earth and heavens...He could have done His creation in one day's time or much less...He is using His example of creation for us to observe and follow...In fact, when you read the Ten Commandments, when Moses writes that we shall labor for six days and then we shall not do any work on the seventh day -you might say God also created the normal work week, thousands of years ago...
After God created the earth and heavens, He rested on the seventh day...In God working six days and resting on the seventh -He has taught us that we can work six days and then we need some rest...Jesus tells us that rest is something we need, when we are weary and burdened...We need to turn to Him and His Father on the seventh day and make it Holy, and He will give us rest...We must take time (at the very least) on the seventh day and think about and seek God... Because God worked six days, He is showing us that we can work six days, but then we need some rest for our bodies and minds...We get weary, tired, and burdened and need rest...So we need time for rest...On the Sabbath we need to turn to Him, so He can help give us this rest...God gives us a day to get caught up from our weariness of our work week, and think of Him...
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath...And He teaches us that the Sabbath was made for man....King David and his men were shown mercy on entering the House of God, and eating the consecrated bread...God shows perfect judgment and the circumstances we are in when He judges us can affect His judgment...The LORD can trump Mosaic Law, because of the circumstances we are in...He knows what was in David's heart and He knows what is in our hearts...It is good to have mercy and do good on the Sabbath (and all days)...Since Jesus is the Son of Man and the Son of God, He is LORD of the Sabbath...He as LORD of the Sabbath teaches us that rest is often not a luxury, but a necessity -and we can find much rest in Him...
In the beginning, God created the days, and the weeks...This means the basic form and foundation of the calendar has always been with us...This shows an example of God using numbers, being orderly, doing things in cycles and symmetry, a Creator of great Divine design, and organized...The seven day week has not changed since God created it -and since Moses wrote about these things...And Moses wrote about this thirty five or four thousand (or more) years ago...There were seven days in the week when the world started, and today there are still seven days in that cycle...
