Mark 1:40-45
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy
40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
41 Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
Jesus healed a leper (and others) and then told him not to tell others about how the healing had happened...I often wonder why Jesus did not want others to tell about how He had helped them...His miracles would have definitely had more people follow Him as He did more and more miracles...
There are a few possible reasons why Jesus might have instructed the man who was healed from leprosy to keep his healing a secret...Jesus might have wanted to avoid unnecessary attention...Jesus often sought privacy and solitude, even after performing miracles...Public attention could have distracted Him from His mission and created unnecessary complications...
He may have wanted to focus on their faith in each of those He healed...By instructing the man to keep his healing a secret, Jesus might have been testing his faith and his willingness to follow His commands without seeking public recognition...
Jesus might have at the time avoid political backlash...At that time, the Jewish authorities were becoming increasingly hostile towards Jesus and His followers...Public miracles could have drawn more attention to Him and increased the risk of persecution...For example after Jesus rose His friend Lazarus from the dead, His opposition plotted to kill Him...
Jesus wanted the people who listened to Him and to those He healed to focus on their spiritual growth...Jesus was more concerned with spiritual growth and transformation than with public acclaim...He wanted people to focus on God and on Him and other things seemed of lesser importance to Him...By keeping those He had healed a secret, the one's He healed were forced to focus on their relationship with Jesus rather than on the external benefits of their healings...
In the end, the reasons for Jesus' instruction are not entirely clear...He does not clarify the reason He ask others to keep certain healings a secret...However, it is likely that He had a combination of these motives above in mind...The important thing is that those He healed were always to have God in mind, and were to give thanks to God for His Mercy and Grace...
When we look at this healing of this leper and the time He expressed frustration on why people should and need faith and spiritual growth, we better see that they both highlight Jesus' emphasis and being centered on spiritual faith over outward signs and wonders...In this particular case of the man healed from leprosy (Mark 1:40-45), Jesus initially instructs him to keep his healing a secret...This could be interpreted as a test of the man's faith, to see if he would prioritize his relationship with Jesus over public recognition...In John 4:48, Jesus expresses frustration with those who seek signs and wonders as the primary basis for their faith...This suggests that He believes that true faith should be rooted in a deeper understanding of His Divine Nature and message, rather than simply relying on outward manifestations of His power...Both of these situations illustrate Jesus' focus on the spiritual dimension of faith and His desire for people to believe in Him not just because of His miracles, but because they recognize His Divine Nature and His message of love, forgiveness, and salvation...
