Mark 1:21-28
Authority of Jesus
21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
John 17:1-5
Authority of Jesus, by His Father
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Colossians 1:15-20
The Supremacy of Christ
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Acts 4:12
Salvation is Found in No One Else
12Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.
The people closest and who knew and studied under and about Jesus, recognized He had some innate authority...The authors St. Mark, St. John, St. Paul, St. Luke, and St. Peter all mention something about His authority or how He is our salvation...The people that Jesus taught and the people that listened to Him were amazed by Him...When Jesus taught, He taught with authority...When He spoke, He spoke with authority...St. Mark writes that the people were so amazed with His teachings, they ask, "What is this?"...A new teaching -and one with authority!...
St. John writes that God, His Father, has granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all those you have given Me...The authority that Jesus has -comes from His Father...St. Paul furthers the Authority and Supremacy of Jesus by telling us He is the image of our invisible God...For by Jesus all things were created; both things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible...Whether these things be thrones or rulers or authorities, all things were created by Him and for Him...For God was pleased to have the fullness of Himself, dwell in Jesus...All things are reconciled to Himself our LORD and God by His Son...This reconciliation was made by the peace through His blood, which He shed on the cross for us...
Most people are amazed by Jesus' miracles, and by the way He taught and spoke...It is sometimes easy to get caught up in reading the Bible, and forget He is the Son of God and God sent...He is from above, and has been with God from the beginning...God sent Him to save us from our sins...The message of the New Testament is so complex, but at the same time simplistic...Jesus was sent by God and died for our sins, because we sin and rebel against God (by sinning)...Jesus saves us from our sins...St. Peter tells us that salvation is found in no other man, there is no one else...There is no other Man in the world by which we can be and must be saved...He is the way to the Father, there is no other way...He is the One with this unique divine authority, and this authority was and is given to Him by His Father, our God...
