Mark 4:35-41
Jesus Calms the Fierce Storm
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
The Disciples and Jesus were in a boat together...A furious squall came up...As the storm and waves rage around them, the Disciples saw Jesus sleeping on a cushion in the stern...They woke Him and ask don't you care if we drown...They wondered why He wasn't helping them with the high waves and the storm upon them...And like His Disciples in their panic, when we suffer, we ask Him don't you care if we suffer...And He listened to them and did not answer their question, in a way that questions get answered...No instead, He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet!...Be still!”...Then the wind died down and it was completely calm...He said to His Disciples, “Why are you so afraid?..Do you still have no faith?”...They were still terrified and asked each other, “Who is this?...Even the wind and the waves obey Him!”...
The winds and the storm had obeyed Him...He was in the same boat as they were...As long as we believe we are maybe not safe from the winds and raging storms of life, but we know that He is with us...And I think this is one of the things we and the Disciples learned that stormy day...Jesus is near and He is with us in our times of trouble...
