William Richard Garry rode his first winner at Leicester on November 27, 1907 and went on to add four more over the next five years.
He had his first ride on Red Hackle, finishing a well beaten last of three finishers in the Combermere Chase at Bangor-on-Dee on April 8, 1904. His Leicester victory, more than three years later, was in the Birstall Selling Handicap Chase on the seven-year-old Agony.
He did not keep the ride and it was not until April 1, 1909 that he scored again when Althrey took the Dobson Foxhunters’ Handicap Chase at Woore. As with Agony, he was riding the eight-year-old Althrey for the first time and, again, he did not keep the ride.
A win by 15 lengths on Reckless II in the Bridgnorth Selling Chase at that Shropshire venue on April 20 was William’s second, and last, success of the season. He had ridden the seven-year-old on his previous outing at Woore earlier that month when they finished second.
Once again, he was replaced by another jockey, and this time he had to wait more than two years before achieving the fourth win of his career when Slip-up took the Saturday Selling Handicap Hurdle at Haydock Park on December 9, 1911.
William managed one more when the five-year-old Valorous won the Selling Maiden Hurdle at Wolverhampton on January 16, 1912, beating Torquemada, the mount of top amateur Harry Atherton Brown, by two lengths.
He had his final ride at the Wenlock Hunt meeting on May 9, 1913, when Salt Lake finished a distant third in the Innkeepers’ Selling Hurdle.
