Michael Ginn

Michael David Ginn was born in 1944 and became apprenticed to Hampshire trainer Bill Wightman at the start of 1960, aged 15.

He came close to becoming leading jockey for half an hour when finishing second on Eyes Down in the Billy Butlin Apprentice Handicap at Lincoln on the opening race of the 1964 Flat season.

That would have been Michael’s first winner. As things turned out, he didn’t have to wait too long to achieve his initial success, that coming on Tannhills in the London Apprentice Handicap over seven furlongs at Newbury on May 29, 1964. It was Michael’s sole success from 20 rides that year, though he came close when finishing second on Courterani in a Folkestone handicap in July.

Michael had just six mounts in public during the 1965 Flat season but did manage to ride a winner, that coming on June 23 aboard Eyes Down in the Polar Jest Apprentice Handicap at Newbury.

Those two winners were the only ones of Michael’s race-riding career. Having completed his apprenticeship, he took out a professional jockey’s licence for one season in 1968 but had few opportunities.
