Michael Gaule had his first ride on Hullo Marten, finishing third in the Boveney Hurdle at Windsor on December 17, 1930, a race won by Staff Ingham on Tullybro.
It was not until September 8, 1932 that he had the only win of his career when Tons Of Luck landed the Brookside Selling Hurdle at Newton Abbot. Michael had ridden the four-year-old twice before and been unplaced both times. On this third occasion they beat Dick Bailley’s mount Zadig by two lengths.
Michael did not keep the ride and had no further success, but at least he managed to ride a winner, unlike Dick Bailey, whose second place finish on Zadig was the closest he came to visiting the winner’s enclosure.
Tons of Luck; Michael Gaule's only winner: Newton Abbot, September 8, 1932
