John Grant, popularly known as Jock, was born in Glasgow. He had never even sat on a horse before joining Compton, Bershire trainer Ken Cundell in October 1964. However, he went on to ride a couple of winners each season between 1965 and 1967.
Aged 16, Jock had his first ride in public on 33/1 outsider L’Aventura, trained by Ken Cundell, at Windsor on June 26, 1965, finishing a creditable fifth of twelve in the Summer Selling Handicap.
Less than two weeks later, L’Aventura, this time a 25/1 chance, gave Jock his first winner in the Bolton Apprentice Handicap at Warwick on July 8, beating Denis Letherby on the 7/4 favourite Macavis by a length. It was only his second ride in public.
The pair struck again at Windsor eleven days later in the Clermont Selling Handicap. L’Aventura beat Alf Westwood’s mount Brebner by a length and a half, with Des Cullen a short head back in third on Clear Away and Denis Letherby a further short head behind on Scottsdore.
Jock’s third win was achieved for Frank Cundell, Ken Cundell’s cousin, on the popular old stager Selly Oak in the Saltford Apprentices’ Handicap at Bath on August 3, 1965. The nine-year-old Selly Oak led inside the final furlong to beat George Kyle’s mount Polairia by two lengths.
He achieved his fourth success later that month on Ken Cundell’s four-year-old Spanish Moon in the Waterhall Apprentice Handicap at Brighton, making al to win unchallenged by eight lengths,
The two-year-old Learned Lawyer, also trained by Ken Cundell gave 18-year-old Jock his fifth success when beating Stan Clayton’s mount Vissia, the 5/4 favourite, by a length and a half in the Clifton Selling Stakes at Bath on June 10, 1967.
He rode his sixth and final winner was Ken Cundell’s Backgammon, the 7/4 market leader, in the Caterham Apprentice Handicap at Lingfield Park on August 18, 1967, beating 11/4 second favourite Riva by a neck.
