Neil Gwilliams

Pint-sized Neil Lee Gwilliams was born on February 28, 1969. He served his apprenticeship with Mick Ryan at Newmarket.

As a 7lb claimer, he rode six winners in 1988 including the Harp Lager Cup at Chepstow in September aboard Greenwich Papillon for Epsom trainer Wally Carter. Greenwich Papillon was the best horse he rode, for he went on to win the following year’s Fielden Stakes at Newmarket when partnered by John Reid.

Neil’s five winners in 1989 included a Nottingham maiden on Langtry Lady, trained by Mick Ryan, on March 27, 1989. The following season, Langtry Lady gave Neil his biggest success when landing Kempton’s historic (Great) Jubilee Handicap on May 7, 1990. He finished second on her in that year’s Ripon Rowels and also in the 1991 Tote Credit Trophy at Chester’s May meeting.

Sadly, Neil’s career didn’t blossom after losing his claim. He rode as a professional from 1994 until relinquishing his licence in 2000, then made a brief comeback in 2001/02 before hanging up his saddle for good.
