James Garbutt

James Garbutt

1784 - 1841

James Garbutt was born in Helmsley on 18 March, 1784, and served his apprenticeship with George Searle. He continued to ply his trade when well into his fifties, his last winner being at Chesterfield in September 1835. He had his final ride in 1837.

He had a large family – at least one of his sons followed him into racing and rode winners. Unfortunately, James was declared bankrupt in 1836.

He died at Norton, near Malton on Saturday, 23 October 1841, aged 57, being found dead in a field near his home when collecting potatoes. He was said to have died by a ‘visitation of God’, although the official description was ‘ossification of the heart’.
