Max Garcia

Maxime Garcia, a cheerful, popular man, and top French jockey, rode over 1,400 winners, heading the French jockeys' list in 1961.

He won the 1958 Epsom Oaks on Bella Paola.

On Wednesday, January 26, 1972, Max was involved in a skiing accident at Courchevel in the Savoy Alps. He had been training for a friendly skiing match between jockeys and cyclists. He missed a corner at the end of the track and tumbled, hitting his head.

Max was taken unconscious from where he fell to a nearby clinic, but was found to be dead on arrival.

He was forty, and left a widow and two children.
