Kieran Gaule

Kieran Patrick Gaule was born in Ireland on August 22, 1973. He came to Britain in 1995 as a 3lb claiming conditional and rode as stable jockey for Geoff Hubbard’s yard, where he formed a successful partnership with Strong Promise, which he rode 15 times.

He rode Strong Promise for the first time at Towcester, winning a novices’ hurdle there on October 4, 1995. They followed up at Ascot on November 18 and then finished in Ascot’s Grade 2 Kennel Gate Novices’ Hurdle. They finished second in Sandown’s Tolworth Hurdle, sixth in the Sun Alliance Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham, then capped off the season by finishing second, beaten a neck, to Urubande in the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle.

Put over fences the next season, Kieran and Strong promise won novice chases at Huntingdon

in September, Cheltenham in October and Ascot on November 2, then two weeks later finished second in the Murphy’s Gold Cup, beaten a neck by Richard Dunwoody on Challenger du Luc. Next time out the partnership gained a deserved big race success when winning the Grade 2 First National Bank Gold Cup Chase at Ascot on November 23, 1996. On Boxing Day, Kiran rode Strong Promise in the King George VI Chase, trailing home last of four finishers behind One Man, Rough Quest and Barton Bank. But that was the last time he rode the horse. He left Geoff Hubbard in January 1997 and moved to Newmarket, while Norman Williamson took over on Strong Promise.

Kieran eventually returned to Ireland where he resumed his career as a dual-purpose jockey, though primarily riding over jumps. He won three races in a row on Clonmel Commercial in 1999, winning at Tralee in August and at Tipperary and Listowel in September. Kieran also had a ride in Japan that year on Matsun (unplaced). He went on to enjoy moderate success, his winners including Andretti Castle at Ballinrobe in July 2002, Rattothetattat at Thurles in December 2002, Panchovillas Gleam at Down Royal in January 2003, and Winaro at Wexford in March 2003.

He rode his last winner on Amplified in the Mullingar Handicap Hurdle at Kilbeggan on July 18, 2003. Amplified was also his final ride ten days later when finishing second in the G.P.T. Dublin Handicap Hurdle at the Galway Festival.

Kieran then took up training, his last runner being Profitable, who finished unplaced at Tralee on August 25, 2007. He now owns and runs Gaule’s Pub in Fethard, Co. Tipperary.
