Michael Gates made a promising start to his career under National Hunt rules with one win and two second places on his first three rides, but he had surprisingly few opportunities after that.
He was beaten ten lengths on his first start when his mount, Whimbrel Wader, could never get on terms with Peter The Butcher in the Elwick Novices’ Hurdle at Sedgefield on May 22, 1981.
The following day he journeyed to Hexham and went one place better when 14/1 chance Gin Track overhauled Mentalist on the flat and took the Shire Opportunity Handicap Hurdle by half a length. The seven-year-old had not been placed in two previous starts that season.
His final ride before the summer break was at Stratford on May 29, when Whimbrel Wonder was beaten a length and a half by Sandra Bella in the Jim Slater Opportunity Handicap Hurdle.
Michael only had a few more mounts the following season, the last at Newcastle on February 20, 1982, when pulling up after two out on Mainsforth Queen when tailed off in the Bream Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2).
