Jake Greenall

Born in 1992, Jonathan James (Jake) Greenall is the youngest of four jockey brothers, sons of former champion amateur rider Peter Greenall (now 4th Lord Daresbury).

Given his father’s success in the saddle, it was no great surprise that Jake would follow in his racing footsteps. However, unlike his father and three siblings, Tom, Oliver and Toby, who all rode at amateur level, Jake was the only member of the family to turn professional.

While riding as a conditional jump jockey based at trainer Henry Daly’s yard, he rode 50-1 chance Rose Of The Moon for trainer David O’Meara the 2014 Grand National. It was O’Meara’s first runner in the race. Sadly, there was no fairytale ending for the first-timers, for Rose Of The Moon fell at the 26th fence after running well for a long way.

Besides Henry Daly, Jake went on to ride winners for James Ewart, Mark Walford and Mick Easterby among others, as well as his brother Oliver when he began training in 2015.

He rode his last winner on his penultimate mount, Gris De Prom, trained by Oliver, in a Market Rasen novices’ hurdle on April 27, 2017. Two days later, on the closing days of the 2016/17 jumps season, he rode for the last time in public, finishing fifth on Quids In, also trained by Oliver, in the bet365 Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at Sandown.

Aged 25, he decided to call time on his riding career to explore new career opportunities outside of racing and said he was looking forward to “making his mark” away from the saddle.

“When I set out I wanted to be in the top ten riders and I’ve thrown everything at it,” he added. “But when you take stock and realise you’re not getting there, I want to go and make a mark on what I’m going to do next.

“I’ve had an amazing time and a huge amount of support, but riding 20 to 30 winners a season is not for me and I want to move on to the next thing now instead of in five years when I’m 30.”
