Iain Derek Middleton Grant rode a couple of winners over jumps in the early 1980s.
One of several conditional jockeys with Arthur Stephenson’s Bishop Auckland stable, he had his first ride at Catterick on April 10, 1980, when Why Forget finished ninth of 23 runners in the Grunwick Stakes National Hunt Flat Race.
His had his first win when the five-year-old Keep Trying, trained by Stephenson, lived up to his name when catching Tyere in the closing stages of the Burgage Novices’ Opportunity Hurdle at Southwell on April 16, 1981 and winning by half a length.
His second success was for Sherrif Hutton trainer Mick Easterby at Catterick on February 13, 1982, when B And K Emperor won Round 5 of the Daily Mirror Conditional Jockeys’ Championship Handicap Hurdle. As with Iain’s first victory, it was only in the last few strides that the five-year-old got up to deny Shalotra.
Despite being associated with two of the leading northern stables, Iain had few further chances. He bowed out when pulling up Misunderstood in the Lichfield Novices’ Hurdle at Uttoxeter on May 30, 1983.
