Derrick Greening

Nicknamed 'Mickey', Derrick Greening was apprenticed to Harold Bazley at Malton and Harvey Leader at Newmarket.

Greening lived at North Lodge, 2, Ashley Road, Newmarket.

His first winner was Flower of India at Newmarket on April 30, 1940.

He rode from 1940 until retiring in 1974.

He married Eileen Margery Bennett. She gave him a son, Richard.

A busy, successful lightweight, he won a string of good races including the Manchester November Handicap, Queen Anne, Gold Vase, Portland, Nunthorpe, Chester Vase, Rosebery Stakes and the Welsh Cesarewitch.

He spent five years in the Army.

He was the son of jockey Herbert Greening (1896-1961).

Having ridden around 400 winners in Britain and many others in India, he retired in 1974.

His interests were golf, swimming and music.

Born on August 24, 1921, Mickey Greening, aged 91, attended the funeral of Silvia Snaith, wife of former jockey Willie.

Willie Snaith attended Mickey's funeral at All Saints Church giving a touching eulogy.

He died at Fairhaven Nursing Home, Soham, Cambridgeshire on August 8, 2014, aged 92. 

Mickey married on 27 February,1943. They had a son, Richard. When his wife died, Mickey and Mrs Norah Fuller became partners and lived together for many years until his dementia got too much for her.
