John Francis Michael Goodwin rode winners on the Flat and over jumps in his native Ireland during the 1970s and early 1980s, the last of which was on Tamers Belle in a hurdle race at Navan on April 20, 1983.
He then crossed the Irish Sea to try his luck in England and rode four winners the following season. His first ride did not go well, as Rhodanna, making her debut over jumps, fell at the second flight in the Mill Stream Hurdle for three-year-olds at Windsor on November 12, 1983.
He registered his first British victory on six-year-old Booly Bay in the Tattersalls Novices’ Chase (Qualifier), a series for mares, at Fontwell Park on December 28, 1983. Booly Bay was making her jumping debut in England, having previously won a Naas bumper under Ted Walsh in May 1982.
John’s second British win was gained aboard Mossy Moore in the Pevensey Novices’ Chase at Plumpton on January 11, 1984. His third came at Cheltenham 17 days later, when Golden Trix narrowly held off the late challenge of Peter Scudamore on Billy Williams’ popular grey Tom’s Little Al to take the Lechlade Handicap Chase by a head.
Following their Fontwell success Booly Bay and John had finished fourth in a chase at Chepstow in January, but at Hereford on February 1 they teamed up over the smaller obstacles and, sent off the 5/2 favourites, won the Damsels Novices’ Hurdle by five lengths.
Booly Bay never ran again, and John was unable to add to his total of four wins in England. His final ride appears to have been Whatton Marina, finishing tailed off in the Easter Selling Handicap Hurdle at Huntingdon on Easter Monday, April 8, 1985. That Huntingdon card was significant in that John Francome rode a four-timer, the last four wins of his illustrious career. He announced his immediate retirement the next day following a fall from The Reject at Chepstow.
