Tony Goswell

By Chris Pitt

National Hunt jockey Anthony (Tony) Goswell held a licence between the 1958/59 and 1963/64 seasons and rode three winners, all of them in 1962 on the 11-year-old selling chaser Taxynthus.

He was based with Lambourn trainer Peter Walwyn throughout his career and recorded his first success on Taxynthus in the Askern Main Selling Handicap Chase at Doncaster on March 19, 1962, following up in a similar contest at Lingfield just two days later, being bought in by the trainer on both occasions.

Tony had 21 mounts during that 1961/62 campaign but only rode in seven races the following season. His sole success – the last of his career in Britain – came on Taxynthus in another Doncaster selling chase on November 24, 1962. Peter Walwyn again bought the horseback for 240 guineas. They finished third in a Manchester selling chase seven days later.

Taxynthus did not run again until March 18, 1963, returning to Doncaster, the course where Tony had twice ridden him to victory. This time, however, the race ended in tragedy, for Taxynthus took a fatal fall at the fifth fence. Tony was taken to the Royal Infirmary with a fractured collarbone. That fall marked the end of his career as a National Hunt jockey, although he did finish second on the Peter Walwyn-trained Gail Greene at Fontwell on Whit Monday, June 3, 1963.

A footnote in the Sporting Life on November 7, 1964, reported that: “Tony Goswell, 27, a National Hunt rider who was with Peter Walwyn in 1962, is now riding in America.”

Tony Goswell’s winners were, in chronological order:

1. Taxynthus, Doncaster, March 19, 1962

2. Taxynthus, Lingfield Park, March 21, 1962

3. Taxynthus, Doncaster, November 24, 1962
