Paul Goldsworthy

The career of National Hunt jockey Paul Goldsworthy ran almost simultaneously alongside that of his elder brother Charlie. Unfortunately, it was nowhere near as successful. Whereas Charlie rode around 40 winners, Paul rode just four.

The first of those was on Jack O’Donoghue’s maiden chaser Fern Cottage at Fontwell Park on Whit Monday, May 28, 1973.

Paul had only four rides in the 1973/74 season, all of them within a month on Arthur Neaves’ three-mile chaser Another Fiddle. Following a third-place finish at Fontwell on October 2, they reappeared at Wye six days later to score by a length from Nigel Wakley’s mount Polish Hard. To make it a family occasion, Charlie Goldsworthy won two races on the same card.

Paul and Another Fiddle finished fourth at Plumpton the following week, returning to Wye on October 29 to scrape home by a head from Wayward Demon, the mount of Reg Crank.

He rode one winner, the last of his career, from 14 mounts the following season, aboard Take A Look, trained by Sid Woodman, in a novice riders’ chase at Fontwell Park on February 5, 1975. He held a licence for one more season before disappearing from the racing scene.

Paul Goldsworthy’s winners were, in chronological order:

1. Fern Cottage, Fontwell Park, May 28, 1973

2. Another Fiddle, Wye, October 8, 1973

3. Another Fiddle, Wye, October 29, 1973

4. Chance A Look, Fontwell Park, February 5, 1975
