John Gale

1923 - 1978

Born on July 31, 1923, Tipperary-based John Gale was an amateur from 1945 to1948 attached to Major Powell's stable. He rode in England from 1946 to 1953 - during this time he won the 1948 (March 4) Kim Muir Memorial Cup on Double Bridge.

He became assistant trainer to Atty Persse in 1953, then returned home to Ireland and rode until 1959.

His first win had come on Try Over at Limerick in 1946.

He married Catherine Shepherd on December 11, 1947. She gave him two sons, Martin & David.

On Monday, April 10, 1950, John enjoyed riding a magnificent treble at Market Rasen which he always said was the highlight of his career.

He won the last three races on The Omadhaun, Almavia & Wicklow Wolf.

John Gale died in August 1978, aged 55.
