Peter Greenall

Descended from a wealthy brewing family, Peter Gilbert Greenall, 4th Baron Daresbury, was born in Marylebone on July 18, 1953, the son of Edward Gilbert Greenall, 3rd Baran Daresbury. He was educated at Eton and graduated from Magdalene College, Cambridge, with a Master of Arts.

Peter rode his first winner on Woodland Poacher in a Huntingdon novices’ hurdle on May 20, 1972. He went on to become joint champion amateur rider in 1975/76 and outright champion in 1976/77.

He achieved his first major success when winning the 1975 National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham on Sage Merlin. He gained a second Festival victory on Timmie’s Battle in the 1978 Cheltenham Foxhunters’ Chase and also won the 1982 Liverpool Fox Hunters’ Chase on Lone Soldier.

He had just one ride in the Grand National, on Shaneman in 1975, but it was certainly an eventful one. Shaneman fell at the first fence, was remounted, refused at the fourth, jumped the fence at the second attempt, then carried on tailed off until being pulled up before the Chair.

Peter retired in 1986 after winning more than 100 races. He succeeded as the 4th Baron Daresbury on the death of his father on September 9, 1996. He became chairman of the De Vere Group plc in 2000.

He married Clare Alison Weatherby on September 11, 1982. They had four sons: Thomas Edward (born 1984), Oliver Christopher (born 1986), Toby Peter (born 1988) and Jonathan James (born 1992), all of whom rode successfully under National Hunt rules.

Residing at Hall Lane Farm, Daresbury, in Cheshire, Lord Daresbury served as chairman of Aintree Racecourse for 25 years before stepping down in 2014.

His brother John Edward Greenall (born July 22, 1960) emulated him by becoming champion amateur rider in the 1993/94 season.
