Fergus began his career as an amateur and had his first ride on the Flat at Windsor in an amateur riders’ handicap on 22 October 2018, finishing 12th of 16 runners on The Lords Walk, trained by his father.
He rode his first winner on Top Chief in a veterans and novice riders’ race at Larkhill point-to-point on 30 March 2019. He had his first success under rules on No No Cardinal, trained by his father, in a two-mile handicap chase at Worcester on 24 May 2019.

Standing 6ft 2ins tall he faced a constant battle with the scales. Having decided to retire from race-riding he posted the following message on Instagram:
“The end of the season marks the end of my journey in the saddle. It’s been a massive privilege to pursue a childhood dream, and I’ll be forever grateful to my family and those who guided me through my career.”
Fergus rode a total of 93 winners under rules plus five in point-to-points, including two at the former National Hunt course at Buckfastleigh.
