Garry Gosney, from Towton, Tadcaster, was born on August 11, 1955, and served a six-year apprenticeship with Harry Wragg.
He rode his first winner, Greenacre, at Folkestone on Tuesday, August 8, 1972. He enjoyed his best seasons in 1977 and 1978 with seven winners in each.
Garry’s biggest victory came on 3-1 favourite Street City at Ayr on Saturday, July 15, 1978, when he won the Joe Coral Handicap.
He rode 43 winners in all with at least one victory in each season between 1972 and 1986. His final win was at Catterick on June 6, 1986, when Gray Starlight, trained by Lynn Siddall, won the Scorton Selling Handicap by three lengths.
After he retired from the saddle, he became head lad to Alan Berry.
On January 14, 1978, he married Rosemarie Kennington.
