Leslie Greatorex

Les Greatorex

Leslie Greatorex, known as Les, rode three winners over jumps in three seasons during the 1930s. with his first success coming at Cheltenham on December 29, 1936. His mount, Milada, was a comfortable six-length winner of the Winchcombe Selling Handicap Chase. The seven-year-old was usually ridden by his trainer Cliff Beechener but Les had been aboard when they finished third at Windsor earlier that month.

A win on Harmony Hall at Devon & Exeter on August 25, 1937 was Les’s only win of the following season. The five-year-old was running for the third time, with Les having been aboard on his previous outing when third at Newton Abbot three weeks earlier.

His third and final victory came on Easter Monday, April 10, 1939, when Fancy Dress won the Dalston Selling Hurdle at Carlisle by four lengths. It was the only time he rode the nine-year-old, who was usually partnered by George Spann.

It appears that Les Greatorex only had one other ride in that 1938/39 season. He retained his licence until the 1940/41 campaign but rode no more winners.
