Syd Green

Sydney Green, known as Syd, had one win over jumps when Welsh Lancer beat a field of 15 to land the Weston Novices’ Chase at Ludlow on April 26, 1956.

The six-year-old had started the season well, winning a novice hurdle at Worcester in November when ridden by his trainer Bob Turnell, but had fallen in three of his last four chases when partnered by Rex Hamey.

It is thus likely that Rex eschewed the chance to renew his association with Welsh Lancer, being happy to let someone else take the ride. Syd made the best of his opportunity, guiding Welsh Lancer to a two-length victory from C.D.B., ridden by Michael Haynes.

Syd had one more ride on the gelding when, back over hurdles, they finished third at Stratford on May 7. He held a licence until the 1957/58 season but had no more winners.
