George Gough

George William Gough was born circa 1872. He was apprenticed to Alec Taylor, had his first ride in 1890 and rode his first winner in 1891.

In 1892 he won the Manchester November Handicap on 100/7 chance Paddy.

In 1893 he won the City and Suburban Handicap on King Charles. King Charles was the only horse in the City & Suburban to wear blinkers. Its owner did not have a penny on him.

He rode 40 winners in both 1894 and 1895.

Sadly, he took to drink soon afterwards and his career went downhill from there.

He last held a licence in 1898. It was said that fate might well have been unkind to him.
