Henry Goater

The son of a labourer, Henry Goater was a less well-known brother of classic-winning jockey James (Jem) Goater.

He achieved his biggest success in the saddle when winning the 1851 Royal Hunt Cup on Sir Charles.

He later became a leading trainer.

Sadly, however, he died on July 10, 1876, at Crawley following a fall from his pony whilst watching his horses gallop on Winchester racecourse. He left £4,000. He was only 42.
