Edward Guest

The son of trainer Nelson Guest, Edward James (Eddie) Guest was born in Marlborough on July 11, 1963. He came from a racing family. His father was a leading jockey in Scandinavia as well as riding winners under both codes in Britain. His mother, Elin, was a top lady rider in Scandinavia and also in the early days of ladies’ races in Britain.

His uncles (Nelson’s brothers) Joe and Charlie Guest were both successful National Hunt jockeys. Eddie’s brothers Gordon and Derek both rode in races, Gordon on the Flat, Derek over jumps. Furthermore, Eddie’s cousins (sons of Charlie) are Grand National-winning jockey turned trainer Richard Guest and former top jockey in Scandinavia and now Newmarket-based trainer Rae Guest; and James Guest, son of Joe, who rode winners over jumps. On his mother’s side, cousins include former jump jockeys, John and Richard Rowe.

Eddie was first apprenticed to his father and then to Eric Eldin. He rode his first winner on Hay Ride in the Captain J. C. Stewart Memorial Handicap at Hamilton Park on September 29, 1980.

The highlight of his career came when winning the Eric Eldin-trained Wonderful Surprise in the Drambuie Liqueur Handicap at Ayr on July 9, 1983.

Having completed his apprenticeship, Eddie rode as a professional jockey between 1987 and 1991.

He has since left the world of racing behind him, Eddie is now a successful boxing promoter. In 2017 he staged a charity boxing night in aid of former jockey Allan Mackay, who had been paralysed in an accident on the gallops.
