西 陽子（にし・ようこ 箏）

箏曲家。和歌山県出身。4歳より生田流箏曲の手ほどきを受け、12歳より沢井忠夫・沢井一恵の両氏に師事。弱冠16歳で日本三曲コンクール入賞。東京藝術大学音楽学部邦楽科卒業。卒業と同時に皇居内桃華楽堂にて御前演奏。平成5年度文化庁芸術研修員に選ばれる。

1993年 東京にてソロデビューリサイタル。

2008年 スイスにおいて世界経済フォーラム(ダボス会議)・TOKYO NIGHTで演奏。ロンドン・チェルシーフェスティバルより招聘を受けソロリサイタル。ソロコンサート「SPIRIT OF A TREE~YOKO NISHI KOTO CONCERT~」アメリカツアー(ワシントン・ニューヨーク・シカゴ)

2009年 ソロコンサート「SPIRIT OF A TREE~YOKO NISHI KOTO CONCERT~」ハンガリー(ブダペスト)・ドイツツアー(ベルリン・ケルン・フランクフルト・ミュンヘン)

2010年 上海万博においてソロコンサート。ニューヨークで行われたNYC・Japan Festival(カーネギーホール主催・芸術監督:小澤征爾)に出演。ニッポン放送の朗読番組「藤沢周平傑作選」の音楽を担当。

2011年 カーネギーホールでデュオリサイタル。これまでの活動をまとめた4枚目のソロアルバム「月夜の海」をリリース。

2013年 全作品作編曲による「The Magic Dragon」をリリース。ブラジル(サンパウロ・ベレン)にて公演。

2014年 リトアニアにて権代敦彦作曲の新作オペラ「桜の記憶」にソリストとして出演。(カウナス市交響楽団 / 指揮・西本智美)

以上のような演奏活動の他、自ら企画・演奏するリサイタルシリーズ「face」(2001~2003) 「LETTER」(2006~2008)では実験的な試みに取り組み、2010年からはコロンビア大学客員研究員としてニューヨークで演奏・創作活動を行い、ニューヨーク・サンパウロをはじめローマ・ニューデリー・香港・サンフランシスコ・台北・ベレンなどで演奏を重ねる。新作初演、古代の復元楽器の演奏、オーケストラとの共演、国内外のアーティストとの即興演奏、他分野の邦楽家や美術家・舞踊家・作家・詩人とのコラボレーション、自作自演、ワークショップ、レクチャーコンサート等ソロ活動は多岐にわたる。

伝統と現代の間でより根源的な視点に立って箏を見つめ、自由な発想と感性で箏の音楽を追究し、最近では、音楽による国際交流と地方(和歌山)における地域に密着した活動の両極から、筝の演奏・創作・教授活動を新しいかたちで発信し、世界や社会と近く深くつながっていける音楽活動を展開している。

Yoko NISHI (Koto)

Yoko Nishi is the koto player who was born in Wakayama, Japan. She started learning koto in the Ikuta style at the age of four and began her studies under the tutelage of Tadao Sawai and Kazue Sawai. In 1980, she won a prize at a Sankyoku competition in Japan at the age of sixteen. After graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, she performed in front of the Japanese Emperor and Empress at the Imperial Palace as a University representative at an event organized by the Imperial Household Agency. In 1993 she became an Art Trainee for the Agency of Cultural Affairs. In 1993, she gave her first solo recital in Tokyo.

In 2008 Ms. Nishi performed at an event organized by the governor of Tokyo at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and “Tokyo Night”. She was also invited to the London Chelsea Festival in the UK, and performed her solo concerts “Spirit of a Tree: Yoko Nishi Koto Concert” in Washington D.C., New York City and Chicago that same year. In 2009 she performed her solo concert “Spirit of a Tree” in Budapest, Berlin, Koln, Frankfurt and Munich. In 2010 she performed solo at the Shanghai Expo and performed at the NYC JAPAN Festival (Carnegie Hall presents, produced by Seiji Ozawa). She appeared on the radio program “Best Selections of Shuhei Fujisawa” on the Nippon Broadcasting System as music director. In 2011 she performed in a duo in the Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall and released a fourth solo album, “The Sea in a Moonlit Night.”

Besides all her highlights mentioned above, she produced and performed in a series of recitals entitled “face” (2001-2003) and “letter” (2006-2008) to challenge the experimental trials. She also has been a visiting scholar at the Columbia University since 2010 and had her concerts across the globe: the concert in New York, Sao Paolo, Rome, New Delhi, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Taiwan, and Belem. Her solo career has ranged from world premieres, performing ancient musical instruments, collaborations with orchestras and improvisations with artists from all over the world. She also collaborates with other traditional Japanese musicians, artists, dancers, writers and poets. She often plays her own music compositions and gives koto workshops and lecture/concerts.

Yoko Nishi is master of koto fundamentals from both the traditional and contemporary repertoire. Freewheeling thinking and inspiration are the key motivating factors in her exploration of Koto music. Recently, she has been pursuing her career to introduce new styles of performance, new compositions and her own teaching method for the koto. She also has been involving herself actively to develop closer bonds in the both global and local (such as her hometown, Wakayama) perspectives through her koto music activities.
