NOTES FOR "EURASIAN TANGO" by AYUO

"Eurasian Tango" was first commissioned in 1998 by Aki Takahashi as a piano piece. In 1997, a CD of mine called "Eurasian Journey" was released from JVC Victor in which I took some melodies from the oldest music manuscript left in Japan, and re-composed them into new songs for a band.

This is a sixth century manuscript, and contains music from China, the Kazahks, the Uigurs, the Turkish nationalities living in Central Asia, as well as music possibly from India and Persia. From about the sixth century, Buddhist songs were sung in Sanskrit, and according to historians, thereare reports of Chinese as well as possibilities of Persian musicians teaching in Japan. This kind of music became the basis for Gagaku (the court music), Shomyo (Buddhist chanting), and the instrumental music performed instruments such as Biwa and Koto, in the same way that Arabic music in Spain Influenced European music during the middle ages. I began a research of this kind of music because I felt that the connections of traditional music which can be traced back from Japan in the Far East through India, Persia, and Greece to the beginnings of civilizations in the ancient Near East were long ignored.

There is a kind of stereotyped image that the music and arts during the late Edo period were the only types of traditional music in Japan, whereas the reality is that the connections with Asia were much stronger. This set of pieces called "Eurasian Tango" continues this concept, only the melodies are completely original. The idea was to combine this with Tango because Aki Takahashi was collecting new music utilizing the Tango rhythm. The first piece is based on the performance style of the plucked string instrument Tambura, played by the Kazahks in the Western parts of China and Central Asia. The second and third pieces are based on a mode created from combining tetra-chords as in Byzantine and ancient Greek music. The tango-like rhythm make these pieces sound like a Greek Rebetika. The fifth piece is more closer to the Persian style of music played on the plucked string instrument, Tar.

Many of the ideas were derived from music on plucked string instruments because I myself am a guitarist and a player of plucked string instruments.

Some of these pieces are also performed with my group which consists of clarinet, violin, bass, percussion, and myself on bouzouki, guitar, and other string instruments.

御喜美江(みき・みえ アコーディオン奏者)

東京生まれ。4歳からアコーディオンに親しむ。16歳でドイツ・トロシンゲン市立音楽院へ留学。1973・1974年「クリンゲンタール国際アコーディオンコンクール」青年の部で連続優勝。同年「アヌシー国際アコーディオンコンテスト」二重奏の部で第1位。ハノーバー国立音大ピアノ科でベルンハルト・エーベルトに師事。ドイツを中心に活発な演奏活動を展開。1990年には1989年度ドイツ・ウェストファーレン州政府芸術奨励賞(音楽部門)をアコーディオン奏者として初めて受賞。

国内では、1977年に岩城宏之指揮・札幌交響楽団で日本デビュー。1987年にサントリーホール、および1988年にカザルスホールのオープニングシリーズでリサイタル。以来、毎年のようにリサイタル「御喜美江アコーディオン・ワークス」を続けており、バロック作品から彼女のために書かれた新作(その数は50以上)に至るまでの意欲的なプログラムが注目を集め、クラシック・アコーディオンの第一人者として幅広い支持を得ている。

CDでは「御喜美江アコーディオン・シーン」(フォンテック)、1997年に音楽の友社主宰レコード・アカデミー賞特別部門(日本人演奏)を受賞した「御喜美江アコーディオン・バッハ」(アイオロス)、「フランス・バロック集」「ドメニコ・スカルラッティソナタ集」「ソノリティズ~日本のアコーディオン作品」、ヴィオラの今井信子とのデュオ「時の深みへ」「涙のパヴァーヌ~アンティクティズ」(以上キング・インターナショナル)など、多数リリース。また自然体で綴られるブログも好評。現在、ドイツ・エッセンのフォルクヴァンク音楽大学アコーディオン科教授。

Mie MIKI (Accordion)

Hailed as a "Queen of the Classical Accordion", Mie Miki, started playing the instrument at the age of 4. At the age of 8, she made her first radio broadcast for NHK in Tokyo. At the age of 16, she moved to Germany to study at the Trossingen Academy of Music in Germany. At the age of 25, she became a professor at Hochschule für Music Detmold in Germany.

After winning the 1st prize at the International Accordion Competition in Klingenthal, Germany and the 1st prize at the International Accordion Competition in Annecy, France, Mie Miki soon started her active performing career in Europe. In the 80s, she was invited to introduce the classical accordion for the first time in the People’s Republic of China. In 1989, for the first time ever as an accordionist, she was awarded the Förderungspreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen for young artists in Germany.

As a soloist, Mie Miki has appeared with numerous renowned orchestras including the Suisse Romande Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and Belgian National Orchestra, under such conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Hiroyuki Iwaki, and Charles Dutoit. A concert series entitled “Mie Miki Accordion Works”, featuring numerous premières, takes place every year in Tokyo and more than 55 works have been dedicated to her by composers such as Hosokawa, Hölszky, Huber, Ichiyanagi, Ishii and Takahashi. Her uniquely composed program with her wide range repertoire from Baroque to Contemporary attracts the audiences from different walks.

More than 30 CDs have been released by major labels such as BIS, Philips, SONY, DENON, Vanguard Classics, Camerata Tokyo and King International. Currently, Ms. Miki is a professor at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen in Germany, and at the Xinjian Arts College in China.

柴崎和圭(しばさき・わか アコーディオン奏者)

フォルクヴァンク音楽大学・アコーディオン教育学科にて御喜美江氏に師事。

卒業後、同大学芸術家コースにて、のちにデトモルト大学芸術家コースにて学び、'02年卒業。同年12月に帰国。滞独中、アーヘン市立音楽学校のアコーディオン科で教鞭をとる。

JAA第1回アコーディオンコンクール総合優勝。

現在、アコーディオン教育に情熱を注ぐ傍ら、ソロ活動の他、室内楽やオーケストラとの共演、オペラなどコンサート活動にも力を入れている。NPO法人日本アコーディオン協会(JAA)理事。
