GUINEVERE :
We need to talk.
May I come in?
LANCELOT :
What can I do for you, my queen?
GUINEVERE :
Oh, stop it!
You’re so distant, I…
…
You and Arthur had a talk, didn’t you?
I don’t know what you told each other. He didn’t tell me anything, you know how he is.
But I can see you keep avoiding one another, and
if you’ve reached that point, then I’m afraid of what it might mean.
Lancelot…
What’s happening to you…?
What do you have to fear by talking to me?
LANCELOT :
…
I’m afraid I’ll hurt you.
That I’ll hurt us both.
I’m afraid I’ll go mad, little by little…
…by going against everything I believe in.
GUINEVERE :
What are you talking about…?
LANCELOT :
…
Guinevere, I cannot forgive Arthur.
[ silence ]
…I can’t stay,
even if knowing you’re so far from me breaks my heart.
Even so, I want to stay by your side
so very badly…
GUINEVERE :
Just for a while, then.
Just for a little while…
Stay with me.
MERLIN :
We are gathered here today in sorrow, in joy, in celebration…
…on this first night on which the veil between worlds is at its thinnest…
…this night on which we celebrate our heroes and our departed.
May their souls travel through the flames and be brought to every home.
May this fire mark
the first day of Samhain.
MORDRED :
( A private conversation with Percival…
It could mean that…
[ insert passionate confession here ]
…
I’m an idiot… )
PERCIVAL :
Oh, you’re here!
MORDRED :
I wasn’t sure what time we were supposed to meet, so I got here as soon as the bonfires started.
There are a lot of people around. It’s better for us to have met here, rather than…
…don’t you think?
( Why is he staring at me? )
PERCIVAL :
Oh! Right!
You’re very handsome!
I-I’m sorry, was that inappropriate…?
MORDRED :
You’re always so blunt.
So, why did you want to see me?
GALAHAD :
…Ah?
Am I interrupting something?
PERCIVAL :
Not at all, Galahad. I was actually about to explain the situation.
[ mordred is hit with RealizationTM. a lad in distress. ]
MORDRED :
( ………Oh. )
PERCIVAL :
I want to ask you both, because I trust you, and you’re still squires. So, tell me…
…Would you go on the Grail quest with me? Just the three of us.
MORDRED :
I… excuse me?
PERCIVAL :
I know it sounds crazy, but
since we got back, it feels like I’ve been waiting for time to go by,
waiting for everything to be approved by the Round Table and done according to the rules.
But the rules are frustrating.
I have to run things by Lamorak, but Lamorak’s not available.
So I need to run them by Aglovale, but Aglovale is…
…too preoccupied.
None of the knights who mean to go on that quest need an extra squire, so I…
I don’t see any other solution.
MORDRED :
…Percival.
Believe me, I know what it’s like to wait for a quest that never comes.
You feel powerless and frustrated, and you want to get out there and prove yourself.
PERCIVAL :
[ sighs ]
That’s not it.
I need to go and fix my mistakes.
GALAHAD :
But we’re supposed to be going too, aren’t we?
The Grail will be found, and we’re all affiliated with the Round Table, so⎯
PERCIVAL :
Not Sir Lancelot.
GALAHAD :
…
Sir Lancelot is a special, complicated case. You don’t want to be in her situation.
Look, when Lamorak wakes up, he’ll⎯
PERCIVAL :
Lamorak’s not going to wake up!
Stop acting like he is, I…
I don’t want to stay in that sordid little room anymore…
…and I’ve got better things to do than wait around doing nothing!
[ he stops, breathing heavily. ]
GALAHAD :
…I can ask a few knights who are currently without squires to go talk to Sir Aglovale.
Sir Lancelot or Sir Palamedes… I can’t make any promises, but surely they won’t turn a blind eye to your situation.
[ mordred hesitantly reaches for percy’s hand. ]
MORDRED :
…I…
I can’t leave on a suicide mission with you, Percival.
But, I can stay with you, if you’ll stay too.
We’ll wait, together.
PERCIVAL :
…Thank you.
KAY :
Bloody hell, there you are.
What are you doing here?
The people want to see their king.
Are you planning to hole yourself up in here until the end of Samhain?
ARTHUR :
Not for more than an hour or two.
KAY :
…
Listen.
I didn’t say anything because I thought it was just the usual post-quest depression.
At least, it was for Bedi and me.
But that’s not the case for you, is it?
ARTHUR :
Ah, what are you getting at?
Is my big brother perchance worried about me?
KAY :
…Wipe that sneaky look off your face.
ARTHUR :
I have nothing new to confess. Just the usual worries.
I fear for the future, and I think
my responsibility in the coming fall of the Round Table
is much greater than I thought.
KAY :
Oh, Arthur…
Really? We’ve talked about this…
What Merlin predicted can mean several things, and you know this.
Worrying about it this much isn’t good for you. That’s why he doesn’t share any prophecies with you anymore, by the way.
Obviously he realizes how much they can affect you.
…You’re worried about the future, I understand. But you know you can count on me, right?
ARTHUR :
I know, Kay. You’d jump in front of me to protect me any time. ( You already have, actually. )
KAY :
I’ll always be here.
So, there will always be a Round Table.
Even if it’s just you and me.
ARTHUR :
And Bedi?
KAY :
Obviously, but it sounded better when I put it that way. ( If he wanted in, he could’ve been here. )
ARTHUR :
…Thank you, Kay.
KAY :
You know what you need?
To go and blow off some steam.
You’ve got all of Samhain to enjoy yourself. So go eat some good food, drink entire barrels dry…
…and go shag your wife, too.
ARTHUR :
Ugh, thank you, Kay.
KAY :
What? It’s been so long, it’ll do you both some good.
ARTHUR :
….Get fucked.
KAY :
It’s part of my evening plans.
C’mon, let’s go.
ARTHUR : …
One last thing, then.
Bring me Mordred, please.
KAY :
Mordred?
ARTHUR :
Yes.
I need to speak to him.
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
Samhain is one of the most important holidays of the year. It celebrates the dead, the start of the year, but also the start of winter.
The celebrations last several days, during which the veil between worlds is at its thinnest : many creatures can cross over, a path that goes both ways.
One of Samhain’s customs has druids lighting great sacred fires around which people can dance, before plucking a flame from it and bringing it back to their homes.
It’s also common to wear a mask carved out of turnips, to scare off adventurous fairies.
