tw for one instance of misgendering near the end of the chapter.

PERCIVAL

Are you angels?

??

Angels? Why would we be angels?

PERCIVAL

It's like you fell from the sky and saved me.

And this outfit,

this suit of armor,

I’ve never seen anything like them in my whole life.

If you’re not angels, what could you possibly be?

GALAHAD

Well…

This is Sir Aglovale, King of Listenoise and knight of the Round Table.

And I am Galahad, a humble squire.

Our outfits are quite standard, I don’t see wh⎯

PERCIVAL :

A what? A Table?

Never heard of it…

I’ve seen villagers wear armor, but never anything like that.

But they didn’t have anything to do with a table,

except maybe the carpenter.

But my mother told me that⎯

AGLOVALE

Either way, perhaps you can answer me.

Have you heard of any strange happenings in these woods?

To be exact, did you hear unusual cries, by an animal you didn’t recognize?

PERCIVAL

And that? What’s that?

( points )

There, in your hand.

AGLOVALE :

You don’t know what a sword is either?

Are you mocking me?

PERCIVAL

Oh, no!

I’ve just never seen one like it.
To be honest, I only know the ones the village militia carries,

and maybe the one Neste uses for hunting…

My mother won't let me carry one myself,

I had to insist to get javelins for hunting.
They’re a lot more convenient than a sword, if you ask me.

[ Background scribble : You don’t need to approach (...), only throw the javelin from afar (...) it should hit the animal without an issue (...) but (...) with time and practice (...) oh but armor (...) be (...) maybe (...) ]

GALAHAD

He’s weird, isn’t he?

AGLOVALE

Without a doubt.

GALAHAD :

You seem unexpectedly calm.

AGLOVALE

Oh no, I am furious.

PERCIVAL

Oh, I digress!

If you’re looking for an animal, perhaps my mother’s peasants saw it.

At any rate, I’m sure my mother would be pleased to let you stay the night.

AGLOVALE

Tell me, my boy,

what is your name?

Your full name.

PERCIVAL

Percival of Wales.

MOTHER

I can’t believe you let him go off on his own, Neste.

And he still hasn’t come back!

Do you have any idea how many things could befall him out there?

So?

What do you have to say for yourself?

NESTE

(fidget, fidget)

Sir Percival is nearly grown.
He assured me that⎯

MOTHER

Percival is not yet an adult, Neste.

It’s up to me to decide what he can or cannot do.

NESTE

My lady, every young noble his age took up arms a long time a⎯

MOTHER

Never.

Percival will never bear a weapon.

Am I clear?

NESTE

…Yes, my lady.

FROM OUTSIDE

Young master, there you are!

[ they both turn. ]

MOTHER

Percival… ! He did get home safely after all…

NESTE

My lady?

MOTHER :
( trembles )

I’ll go and greet him. You may go.

But we will speak of this again, Neste.

FROM OUTSIDE :

You scared us, you know?

When we saw that nag o' yours return without you, we feared the worst!

[ Neste sighs ]

PERCIVAL

Everything is fine, Rhys, I’m safe and sound.

These two need shelter for the night,

and someone to care for their horses.

If you’d seen it, Rhys, he has such a splendid suit of armor!

He’s a “knight”, if I understood correctly?

NESTE

Oh.
Oh, no.

PERCIVAL

I swear, they took down a bear!

In just one strike of his sword!

It's called a “rapier”, apparently?

I’d never seen one before, but it’s very pretty!

RHYS

Ah, I can believe it, sir…

But I don’t know if your lady mother will⎯

MOTHER

Percival!

RHYS

M-my lady!

MOTHER

How could you, Percival?

I was so worried!

Have you no scruples about causing your poor mother such distress?

Or did you mean to…

PERCIVAL

Ah, Mother, forgive me.

Some very strange things happened to me,

and I met a knight, whatever that is.

Please, don’t get mad, I⎯

AGLOVALE

Is it my presence that renders you speechless?

This said, I can understand.

It has been a very long time since we last saw each other,

hasn’t it, Mother?

( My lady! My lady!)

NESTE

You gave me a scare, my lady.

This much excitement isn’t good for you.

You should rest up this evening, you know.

MOTHER

Thank you, Neste. You may go.

Aglovale and I need to talk.

NESTE

…Very well, my lady.

… Sir Aglovale.

AGLOVALE

Neste.

She’s grown a lot.

I didn't expect her to still be in your service.

I remember when she was what, ten?

When she helped her mother in the stables,

and was already able to take care of livestock.

And now she's married.

Time truly does fly.

MOTHER

You look well.

AGLOVALE

... Oh, yes.
That said,

I’m not the one who disappeared fifteen years ago without a word of warning.

MOTHER

… I owe you an explanation.

AGLOVALE

It matters not.

No explanation can change the way I feel.

Besides, I already know why you left.

My father’s death wounded you deeply,

And you couldn’t bear the thought of seeing your children meet the same fate.

So you fled,

taking Percival with you, hoping to save him,

and leaving your two other children to their hypothetical tragic fate.

Will you tell me I’m wrong?

MOTHER

… You don’t have all the facts.

AGLOVALE

What does it matter?

MOTHER

The fact that you believe I left because of a hypothetical⎯

Both of your fates are already sealed.

Merlin predicted

that my first two children would meet the same end as their father.

Merlin’s prophecies are always right.

Knowing I was powerless to stop it, I then decided to⎯

AGLOVALE

It’s even worse than I thought.

Your first reaction to a prophecy you knew to be true

was to think about your own feelings

when Lamorak and I will inevitably fall in battle?

It’s our duty as knights, Mother.

Yours would have been to stay by our side,

and you failed.

MOTHER

Do you truly think a parent’s duty is to bury their child?

To watch them enter fruitless fights, constantly afraid to see them fall?

I’ll tell you, this is exactly why I didn’t try to convince you two to follow me.

As soon as you took up arms, all you could talk about was honor and principles,

and you would never have listened to my despair, knowing that one day, I would have to see you die before my very eyes.

AGLOVALE

I’ve heard enough.

MOTHER

Aglovale, please.

AGLOVALE :

I said enough.

MOTHER

… How did you find us?

AGLOVALE

… Ironically, Merlin told me to investigate the lands surrounding Mount Snowdon.

I found Percival there.

I knew it was him, because he looks very much like Lamorak.

MOTHER

… How is she?

Is she strong enough to hold her own as a knight?

AGLOVALE

… Lamorak is well.

You know, I didn’t make a detour in my quest to pay my respects,

or even to see you again, to be frank,

but to make sure Percival follows the path that his status dictates he ought to take.

MOTHER

No. No!
