DINADAN

( Stop it, Fifi! )

PERCIVAL

Welcome back, Dinadan!

DINADAN

Well, looks like you’re doing better.
Ribs still hurting?

PERCIVAL

No, I’m okay.
( I’m still a little cold. )

DINADAN

Good! With what I found, we should be all set to go.

( Say, I even got us a bit of ham. )
( Percival : Ham! )
Where are Tristan and his Gloomy Highness?

PERCIVAL

They’re in the courtyard, and, uh…
Sir Tristan’s been acting strange since you left.
( His Gloomy Highness? )

DINADAN

Strange? How so?

PERCIVAL :

Well, he looks…

… depressed?

DINADAN

… I should’ve guessed this would happen.

Tristan, hey.
We’re gonna be good to go within the day, c’mon.

TRISTAN :

(depressed)

 … What’s the point.
All this wasted time…

We’ll have to catch up to Breuse…
then come back to finish the quest…
and finally go back to Camelot…
So many steps before I can return to Tintagel…

MORDRED

Do you miss Cornwall that much, sir?

DINADAN

Well, not exactly, it’s⎯

TRISTAN :

Iseult!
Oh! To overstep my bounds to ravish her and leave this languishing behind…

( trembles )

PERCIVAL :

… Who…
is Iseult?

TRISTAN :

(shocked)

Who is Iseult?!

Iseult is the glow of the rising sun warming my skin,
the ocean's alluring waves drawing me in,
the lightning that sparks a blaze as fiery…

as my deepest devotion!

DINADAN

I can assure you she is a woman, not a storm.

TRISTAN

She’s the love of my life!

DINADAN

Tristan, enough about Iseult.

PERCIVAL :

( After we left, Sir Tristan got his cheer back.
According to Dinadan, he falls into these slumps when he’s bored,
especially on the heels of such excitement.
Fortunately, Dinadan’s good mood is contagious.
Following the hound, we headed north.
The journey was an opportunity to learn about their past quests… )

TRISTAN

No, no, that was when we went back to Ireland.

DINADAN

Are you sure?

TRISTAN

Yes, Lionel was still around.

PERCIVAL :

( … and about fallen knights.
I was a bit lost in everything they mentioned, so I asked some questions.
The Round Table was created in the wake of a civil war in Britain…
… of which Arthur’s advent was the starting point.

Several monarchs did not approve of him,
including King Loth of Orkney,
who plotted a rebellion for years before putting his plans into action,
which led to his tragic fate, sealed by my father, Pellinore. )

TRISTAN

I think it really did weaken the Round Table’s unity.
Or at least, Arthur’s belief that it would hold together.

At the time, some knights were very poorly looked down upon because of the places they came from.

MORDRED

… So it hasn’t changed, then?

TRISTAN

What do you mean by that, Mordred?

MORDRED

According to Breuse, that’s why you hate him.
Because you were on Arthur’s side during the war, and he…
on my father’s.

TRISTAN

I’m… really sorry, Mordred.
But he lied to you.
At that time, Dinadan and I were your age at most.
And the three of us didn’t know each other.
Besides, it would be very unseemly of me to resent Breuse for that,
given that Cornwall rose up right alongside Loth.
[ arrows : treacherous scum, tee-hee~ ]
Breuse clearly doesn’t need that to be obnoxious.

MORDRED

(perplexed)

But, why would he lie to us?
It makes no sense.

DINADAN

To make you feel sorry for him, probably.
He does it to get out of tight spots a lot. He's always manipulated everyone whenever he pleased.

TRISTAN

Our resentment comes from the fact that we were allies, and that he deceived us.

To tell the truth, he and I used to be very close.
And I have Din and his brother to thank for their dedication
to finally making me see the truth of him,
because I was ready to forgive him anything.
I was young,
dumb,
and madly in love.

DINADAN

Things haven't changed much, you’re just not all that young anymore.

TRISTAN

Hey!

PERCIVAL

Sir, you…
You really have terrible taste in men…

TRISTAN

( Ouch, such honesty… )
He just didn’t age well, he was very handsome when⎯

DINADAN

Nah, he always looked like a rat’s ass.

TRISTAN

Din… ( How cruel… )

DINADAN :

But hey, you made up for it later.
And now you’ve got Iseult.

TRISTAN

And she’s perfect!

PERCIVAL

( Two days later, we were out of Corbenic.

As promised, Sir Tristan started supervising our training.
Every day, Mordred and I were made to attack him as a pair.
Every day…
he gave us the beating of a lifetime. )

TRISTAN

The goal isn’t to win against me, that’s not going to happen.
You just have to be at ease with each other.
Fighting as a pair is like dancing.
You must learn your partner’s steps to perform yours well.
C’mon, let's get back into it!

PERCIVAL

( Mordred…
… didn’t seem very pleased by this turn of event.
I thought he still wanted to speak to Dinadan, but couldn't muster the nerve to do so.
So I tried to cheer him on.

( I’m right behind you, go go! )
… In vain.
And then one day… )

TRISTAN

Look, Din and I made a deal!
He’ll be supervising your training today, for a change!

MORDRED

Why's that?

TRISTAN

I feel like you need a little change in opponents.
I wouldn’t want you to get used to my moves!

MORDRED

( disdainful )

Against him, really?
I haven’t seen him use a single weapon since we met.

DINADAN

True, I’m probably a bit rusty.
Nothing that’ll stop me from going up against a couple of squires, though.

MORDRED

[stare]

Percival.

Stay back.

[unsheathes sword]

PERCIVAL

Huh?

DINADAN

He’s right, Percy.
I think his Gloomy Highness
is dying to blow off some steam with me.

[ fight fight ]

DINADAN

See, a lance has two ends you need to watch out for.
You were taken by surprise, I think.
Wanna try again?
If you want, I won’t go for a backhanded strike this time⎯

MORDRED

I…
I don’t even know why I’m trying.
… This is why you wanted to bring me along, isn’t it?
So you could mock me
and make a show of contemptuous pity.
Your lie about the quest, your lack of interest in our training…
It only makes sense if you see it in this light.
You were just waiting for me to admit to my own mediocrity.

DINADAN

… Contempt and mockery, huh?
Are those really my only options?

MORDRED

There’s also the need for a squire, as mediocre as they may be.

DINADAN

You’re not mediocre, Mordred.

MORDRED

Do you think Gawain only lets me keep watches
just because she’s “protective”?
She got the right of it,
same as Tristan.
We’re weak, as far as squires go.
Percival just has the excuse of having only started training two months ago⎯

DINADAN :

You beat three apprentices at that tourney, Mordred.
Three kids nearly as tall as you, probably older, all ganging up on you.
You have no idea how promising that is, for a squire.
So what, did you think you'd beat me?
You have a very poor opinion of me, I can understand that,
but I’m still a knight with more years of experience under my belt than you have in your life.
Look, I can’t speak for Gawain. But Tristan was never a squire at all, so he doesn’t know what it’s like.
To be under such pressure, such expectations from your family…
It makes you feel like becoming the best
is your only goal as a knight.
But we can’t all be Lancelot.
… Even Lancelot's not what you'd expect of the best knight around.

The only reason why I brought you and Percival along
is because the two of you looked absolutely miserable in Camelot.
So, yes, I could’ve brought anyone,
and I don’t care about your combat skills at all.
But I thought that, just for the one quest,
I could take your mind off things a bit.

PERCIVAL :

Dinad⎯

MORDRED

Very well.
… Let’s go again.

PERCIVAL

( Training picked back up again.
( Tristan : Come and join us, Percival!
Percival : Yeah! )
And soon, we’ll be in Lothian,
ready to go up against Breuse. )

ROUND TABLE TRIVIA

Where would a knight be without their trusty horse? Here’s a few of the horses of the Round Table!

Fifi doesn’t need introductions anymore, what a star.
Fifi is short for “fifille” (girlie).

Tristan’s horse name is Bastard, and it pays him back a hundredfold.

Seneschal Kay’s horse is “Long-Necked Alezan” .
( Kay, rejecting emotional attachment )

Knights suck at naming things.
