SHERIFF :
I would advise you to cooperate.
I wouldn’t want to get blood in the cell I saved for you.
DINADAN :
What are we being accused of, exactly?
And with what evidence?
SHERIFF :
Of plotting against the local authorities.
And I have a witness.
DINADAN :
A witness?
?? :
Oops, sorry.
I wanted to test your reflexes, since it’s been a while.
TRISTAN :
Breuse?!
BREUSE :
Oi, if that isn't dear old Tristan of Lyonesse…
… and company.
DINADAN :
Ugh, don’t tell me you’re the “witness”?
BREUSE :
Unpleasant company, but at least you're observant.
DINADAN :
I assure you, it’s my usual expression whenever I see you, Breuse.
BREUSE :
Ah, Dinadan. Such venom, it makes my heart bleed.
DINADAN :
That would imply you have one.
PERCIVAL :
He talks a little bit like you, do you know him?
MORDRED :
I don’t know every single Scotsman, Percival.
SHERIFF :
Enough.
This knight informed me that you meant to take this tourney’s prize for your own.
TRISTAN :
A stolen prize for an illegal tourney.
SHERIFF :
Until the king takes action to keep this tourney from happening, I’m the acting authority on the matter.
You see, sirs, it’s been years since the king last made himself known to us.
The last people to have seen him caught him fishing.
( Percival : …? )
He fishes, while his lands go to waste.
Every city tries to stop their decline as best they can…
… My plan is to organize a tourney.
TRISTAN :
Very well. I’ll make myself clearer, then.
The tourney’s prize is a magic shield, and so it is dangerous.
Bespelled artifacts may not be a regular occurrence for you, but they are for me.
Every kind of magic has its price,
and that price is never worth the cost.
That’s part of the reason why magic died out, after all.
I promise your suffering does not fall on deaf ears,
but I cannot leave this item in your hands, either.
It is my duty as a knight.
BREUSE :
Oh, you’re using your serious voice.
You’d think this actually does matter to you.
TRISTAN :
Shut up, Breuse.
SHERIFF :
I do have an offer for you.
You see, this tourney would become much more interesting, financially speaking, if knights of the Round Table were to take part in it.
If you want this shield, you can win the tourney.
DINADAN :
That makes no sense, it’s⎯
SHERIFF :
Only the one match, not the whole tourney.
Are you truly in a position to negotiate, sirs?
TRISTAN :
Oh, I think we are.
Just between ourselves, Breuse here is a greater threat than every man in your village put together,
and he’s not that much of a concern to me.
BREUSE :
Aww, Trist⎯
TRISTAN :
In other words,
it is not my blood you should be worrying about.
SHERIFF :
… So be it.
The wrestling match, then, without your weapons.
TRISTAN :
Very well.
Dinadan, is that alright with you?
DINADAN :
Wh-what?
I’m not doing this.
TRISTAN :
Aww, but I can’t do it on my own!
DINADAN :
Sounds like a you problem.
It’s your call, and I’ve got nothing to do with it,
so nothing will make me participate.
SHERIFF :
And so we welcome two knights of the Round Table,
Dinadan of Estrangore
and Tristan of Lyonesse
to take part in the final match,
which will decide the winner of the prize of Leeds' tourney.
TRISTAN :
I didn’t expect this to take place in the crypt, actually.
The crowd’s pretty close to the field, but…
… desperate times call for desperate measures, I suppose.
Don’t make that face, it makes you look like your brother.
( rub rub )
DINADAN :
And? My brother’s very handsome.
TRISTAN :
True.
Look, I know we said we wouldn’t take part in the tourney, but it was the only solution we had, after all.
DINADAN :
Is that right?
What a coincidence.
TRISTAN :
…What?
You⎯
You think I⎯
Voluntarily??
But⎯ not⎯ not at all⎯
I’m shocked that you would insinuate⎯
DINADAN :
(stare)
TRISTAN :
…
You’re too observant for your own good.
DINADAN :
And you’re getting on my nerves, but whatever.
I still have a bad feeling about this,
especially now that Breuse’s involved, so⎯
BREUSE :
Hi.
TRISTAN :
Get lost, Breuse.
BREUSE :
C’mon, I know you missed me.
DINADAN :
I miss my creditors more than I miss you.
TRISTAN :
What are you doing here, Breuse?
I’m already surprised you’re not already leagues away, blowing all the money you got selling off the shield on gambling and debauchery.
BREUSE :
You think I’m the one who stole it?
TRISTAN :
No,
I know you are.
So get out.
BREUSE :
If it makes you happy, know I did place a bet,
so don’t disappoint me, Tristan.
TRISTAN :
… You’re right, Din.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this too.
SHERIFF :
The squires’ match will be starting soon!
Participants, please gather near the field and prepare for battle.
PERCIVAL :
Y-yes, we’re ready!
Ah, Dinadan and Tristan are over there, on the other side.
( Go Go! Heey! )
I wonder what they’re saying?
TRISTAN :
They don’t stand a chance, do they?
DINADAN :
Nope. Aglovale and Gawain are going to kill me. <3
PERCIVAL :
They look pretty confident, don’t they?
( Someone has to be. )
…
… Are you mad at me?
MORDRED :
Sorry?
PERCIVAL :
Oh, it’s just that you haven’t talked to me in days, so⎯
MORDRED :
No, I’m not mad.
… Not at you.
PERCIVAL :
… At Dinadan, then?
You seemed distant lately.
MORDRED :
… At first, yeah.
But now, I’m not even angry anymore.
His actions don’t make any sense to me,
and I’d like to know why he did all he could to bring us along,
but I’m afraid of what his answer will be,
and I’m telling myself that my other choice would’ve been to stay in Camelot doing nothing,
because nobody wants me as their squire.
PERCIVAL :
… Ah⎯
MORDRED :
But whatever.
I shouldn’t be sharing all of this with you.
You don’t need to know.
PERCIVAL :
… Isn’t that what friends do?
My mother told me that⎯
Oh, sorry, Lamorak hates it when I say that…
But, confiding in someone is a sign of friendship, isn’t it?
Do you see me as a friend, Mordred?
MORDRED :
I… guess?
PERCIVAL :
So ask him!
Ask Dinadan why he brought us along.
If you’re afraid of what he’s going to say,
I’ll be here to support you!
MORDRED :
… Okay.
( Are you stressed about the match? )
( Percival : I-I'm stressed about the crowd, mostly. )
SHERIFF :
The squires’ match is about to begin.
Young ones, please enter the field.
?? :
There go the Round Table stooges.
I heard
one squire out of every two dies before they’re knighted.
So, which one will it be?
SHERIFF :
The last one standing will be declared the victor.
May the match begin
now!
MORDRED :
Percival, you should⎯
?? :
Get them!
PERCIVAL :
Mordred!
?? :
You should worry about yourself, Welshman.
When you're this small
you're easy to break.
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
The Round Table’s armors were designed by Trabuchet, King Arthur’s official smith.
“Hello, I am the Example Knight!”
The armor is made up of :
a woolen jersey
a breastplate
a gambison
chausses
Every knight has their own version of this suit.
Namely, the gambison, made up of two pieces, bears the colors of each knight family’s sigil.
( In order : Listenoise, Orkney, Cornwall, Estrangore. )
