SERVANT :

Oh, Sir Gawain!

Didn’tcha go back to Camelot with your family?

GAWAIN :

I’ll join them once I’m somewhat recovered.

SERVANT :

Oh, dear, you shouldn’t have come back here while you were still convalescin’…

GAWAIN :

I’ll be quick. I just wanted to check…

Given the tragic events from the other day, I wanted to take care of the last of Sir Aglovale and Sir Lamorak’s mail.

SERVANT :

A terrible shame, that it is…

If you know who they were for, I could send them off for ya.

GAWAIN :

That’s the thing. I didn’t find any mail, which was surprising,

given Sir Aglovale’s propensity for writing letters, especially to his seneschal.

So I wanted to know whether he’d sent them off already…

I wouldn’t want to miss anything by being careless, you see.

SERVANT :

Of course, I’ll ask my guys.

That’s so kind of you, ma’am.

GAWAIN :

( I destroyed it all.

Every bit of it.

I’d rather make sure not a single thing was left behind. )

SERVANT :

You can rest easy, ma’am!

My guys told me Sir Lamorak came by a few days ago,

to have a letter sent off to Queen Guinevere. That must’ve been it!

GAWAIN :

Yes, certainly.

Thank you, good fellows.

[ she rides off into the forest, before stopping in a deserted clearing. ]

GAWAIN :

 ( Damn it!

It makes no sense. Why would he send the letter off before confronting me?

Unless…

Unless he knew how I would react. )

[ flashback : I challenge you to a duel, Aglovale of Wales. ]

( …

Even in death…

…he keeps tormenting me!

I really…

I fought this duel,

all for nothing.

Nothing at all. )

ARTHUR :

 Aglovale and Lamorak are…

…dead…?

MORGAN :

Yes, Arthur.

As I told you, the Grail appeared.

Lamorak…

…By the time we intervened, it was too late.

ARTHUR :

[ he sits down and puts his head in his hands. ]

KAY :

Wait, what⎯

ARTHUR :

Kay.

Can you make plans for the funerals within the week?

KAY :

I’ll need more time to get everything ready.

ARTHUR :

So we’ll take care of it after the knighting ceremony. [ sighs ]

It’ll give us more time to send word to the other kingdoms, the knights, and…

…Percival.

BEDIVERE :

I’ll…

…go and let Palamedes know.

She’ll want to be the one to tell him.

MERLIN :

Tell her I’ll take her to him.

So they’ll all have time to make it back to Camelot.

BEDIVERE :

 …Very well.

ARTHUR :

Will you take care of the rites, Merlin?

MERLIN :

Of course.

ARTHUR :

Morgan, do you have anything to add?

MORGAN :

[ looks through her bag ]

Gawain agreed to let Mordred be knighted.

I brought you her writ, in case she cannot make it back for the ceremony.

I don’t doubt she’ll come to see you in person to discuss the details with you,

once she recovers from her wounds.

ARTHUR :

Kay, Merlin…

Could you leave us?

I’d like to speak to Morgan, alone.

[ the door slams shut. ]

ARTHUR :

…Is there something I should know?

MORGAN :

What do you mean?

ARTHUR :

[ stands up ]

Let’s say…

…I find the situation beyond suspicious.

MORGAN :

Why not ask Gawain, if you won’t take my word for it?

I know she’ll tell you everything as always, anyway.

ARTHUR :

So you must know she told me about your grudges,

and her fear of what you might do against the Round Table.

I deserve your ire, Morgan.

And you may take it out on me all you like. I won’t stop you.

But I won’t let you destroy the Round Table.

MORGAN :

What are you saying?

I made a vow.

I swore to care for and protect each and every one of the Round Table’s knights, you among them.

No, the one who’ll destroy the Round Table…

…is your son.

ARTHUR :

Don’t call him that.

Never.

MORGAN :

To deny it will only make the situation crueler.

And intimidation won’t work on me, Arthur.

Not anymore.

ARTHUR :

What can I do to convince you?

You have Lothian. You have Orkney.

Is it Cornwall you want? I cannot give it to you without starting a war against Ireland.

There must be something I can give you.

MORGAN :

Something you can give me…?

Indeed, there is

something you can do for me.

Despair.

Rise every morning wishing it was the last.

Bear witness as your knights tear each other apart and give in to hopelessness, one by one.

Watch yourself inch ever closer to the edge of the precipice, and hope you’ll get to jump off as soon as you can.

And when you’ll have spent enough time with the man you become when your back is to the wall…

Maybe then…

Maybe then I’ll forgive you.

[ cut to joyous guard. ]

PERCIVAL :

Merlin and Palamedes?

What are they doing here?

…?

Why are they looking at me like that?
