MORGAN

No, this isn’t it…

…not this either…

AGLOVALE

BRUNOR

Hey.

Quit sulking.

AGLOVALE

I’m not⎯ (hmpf!)

I’m ashamed, is all.

I was careless, and…

I was a burden for you.

BRUNOR

A burden? Not at all.

It was a little like…

carrying a foal. ( You know, the newborn ones. )

AGLOVALE

That’s not what I mea⎯

A foal?!

BRUNOR

Yeah, they're basically weightless

AGLOVALE

I will not permit such⎯

[ aglovale catches mordred staring ]

AGLOVALE

You know, Mordred…

You don’t have to be so tense around me.

What do you have to fear from me?

MORDRED

…Nothing.

I know you’re wise enough not to try anything for the sake of vengeance,

unlike Lamorak.

AGLOVALE

Sir Lamorak.

MORDRED

…Sir Lamorak.

AGLOVALE

…Lamorak can be thoughtless, it's true.

But nonetheless, he still respects the code of honor for duels.

MORDRED

What does that have to do with anything?

AGLOVALE

What do you mean, what does that have to do with…?

…What do you know about what happened between your sister and my father?

MORDRED

…Not much.

Gawain never talked about what happened.

AGLOVALE

…They dueled as two knights ought, in a match overseen by Arthur himself.

The official code of honor for duels forbid anyone from enacting revenge over their outcome.

So, Lamorak won’t do anything about it.

That would be the same as publicly disavowing our father’s decision…

…and sullying his memory by opposing the duel’s outcome. All in all, it would lose us our honor.

MORDRED

…I’m not so sure.

He proved himself to be quite aggressive more than once.

AGLOVALE

Lamorak has his own way of coping with his pain.

His bark is worse than his bite, but it is born of frustration more than aggression.

But if that isn’t it, Mordred…

Why are you still staring at me?

MORDRED

…Sometimes, you…

…remind me of Percival. That’s all.

AGLOVALE

Oh, that’s a pleasant surprise.

It’s rare for anyone to find a resemblance between u⎯

( Eh? )

……….Oh.

Oh, no.

No, no.

You do not have my permission to court him.

MORDRED

I never said that⎯

AGLOVALE

So it is for such base intentions that you approached him…

I understand now…

MORDRED

Absolutely not?!

GUINEVERE

Oh?

What is it?

BRUNOR

…You seem quite affected by this situation.

Who is that Malduc the mage spoke of?

AGLOVALE

Brunor!

It isn’t appropriate to question the queen so⎯

GUINEVERE

( Stop it. )

No, I can explain.

It’s no secret.

Malduc was a powerful mage, and an enemy of Britain. He came to the continent by way of sea, trying to help a lord settle on the coast.

They failed.

But war brings about both tragedy and lingering resentment.

He became the Round Table’s enemy and held deep loathing for a few of the knights in particular,

Gawain among them.

At the time, some lords still rose up against Arthur from time to time. Or, at least, they used blackmail to demand privileges.

I was often a prime target then.

What better way to force the king’s hand than to threaten the queen?

Malduc took advantage of one such situation to abduct me in turn, keeping me imprisoned in his home,

and demanding that a few specific knights be turned over to him as prisoners in return for me.

And for my sake, so I would be saved…

…those knights turned themselves in to Malduc.

…Then, rumors started to go around.

Rumors about the torture these knights had to endure.

Arthur could not bear it.

He begged Lancelot to intervene, and…

BRUNOR

It was a bloodbath, wasn’t it?

GUINEVERE

…I didn’t know he had a daughter.

I can only remember the boy who took care of me.

BRUNOR

They might be one and the same.

GUINEVERE

They could.

I’m surprised she’d try to avenge her father’s death, though.

…He didn't seem to treat her very kindly.

BRUNOR

…Do you feel guilty?

GUINEVERE

Perhaps a little. I sometimes wonder

if we could avoid the sorrows

that lead us to such inextricable situations.

MORGAN

Damn it.

It’s a translocation spell.

AGLOVALE

…Will-o’-the-wisps?

MORGAN

It’s already started!

GUINEVERE

What does that mean, Morgan?

MORGAN

It means that if we don’t act quickly,

Camelot will disappear, pure and simple,

and be replaced by a horde of dangerous creatures.

VIVIANE

Here you go, honey.

Bors’ armor.

Don’t worry about him too much, he only needs to rest up some. He’ll come back to you in perfect health!

GALAHAD

…I’d like to believe you.

VIVIANE

My horse will lead you to the edge of the forest.

Your own will be waiting for you there.

When you reach it, you’ll be a three-day’s ride from Camelot.

ARTHUR

Thank you, Viviane.

Let us go, my knights. Camelot awaits.

VIVIANE

(sigh)

…I thought you’d left already.

Isn’t it an emergency?

??

I must be well-prepared.

MERLIN

Do you happen to have some dried bleak around? It’s for a concoction.

VIVIANE

You've always had a way with women.

[ cut forward. merlin stirs his concoction. ]

VIVIANE

…Do you think the Grail will be found?

MERLIN

I am not certain, but yes, I think so.

Either way, I know it’ll lead us to meet more often in the coming months.

VIVIANE

( hehe <3 )

I like the sound of that.

Go help those poor humans.

Waiting for you is part of the appeal.

MERLIN

Hello, Morgan.

Oh, did you do something with your hair?

GUINEVERE

Merlin, what⎯

MERLIN

You clearly need a hand, and I brought you what you need.

GUINEVERE

What we need…?

MERLIN

Myself!

GUINEVERE

Morgan couldn’t stop this mage. Even you shouldn’t take her lightly.

MERLIN

…Well, what do we have here…?

I know the details, Guinevere.

Indeed, the spell isn’t to be taken lightly.

But that girl…

…is no mage.

ROUND TABLE TRIVIA

Will-o’-the-wisps are wandering flames, formed from magical energy.

They aren’t dangerous by themselves, but it would be wise not to follow them : they can lead careless travelers into ravines, or even to other creatures.

NPC

Yay, will-o’-the-wisps!

Monster

Yay, dinner!

Indeed, will-o’-the-wisps are drawn to humans, so it isn’t rare for them to be drawn to creatures that were once human.
