1. My Interest in Diversity and Equality in Japanese Society
I wanted to take this seminar. I have a reason. When I was a college freshman, we learned international issue mainly with other students in the class. At that time, we had a chance of presentation with a strong interest in LGBT. I thought there were many people who has a sense of incongruity of gender. However including celebrity, they reveal their true nature more and more. It’s also the case recently that the term LGBT has become widespread.
In particular, it is said that classic idea has taken root in Japan for many years by all around the world. This country is not a developing country, and medical technology is world-class. Nevertheless, I thought it's an embarrassing country to be late because of such individual personalities. As we learned during the survey of first-year students' presentation preparations, it seems that women's universities are unique to Japan because of the way they are. In this way, even universities can be regarded as helping to divide gender into two.
I began my research by looking at the treatment for LGBT people by Japanese law and education mainly. Next in Cycle 2, I focused on people being LGBT people and minorities in the world. Because I thought we should know not only LGBT people but also about other “minorities”. For Cycle 3, I concentrated on gender minorities widely connected Japanese costoms.
I hoped that such sexual minorities will be able to live in a country where they can live a little easier. I also wanted to actively participate in volunteer activities and opportunities to interact directly with such LGBT people, and I wanted to find out facts that cannot be found only by searching the Internet.
Surely, I was interested in LGBT people. In addition, racial discrimination too. We could think that foreign workers, overseas student studying in Japan and foreign tourist etc. increase to Japan more and more for Tokyo Olympics in 2020. I wanted to learn how to do effort to make a posture of reception at this seminar.
2. Issues for the LGBT Community in Japan
I researched about LGBT people living in Japan. Why are there few LGBT people in Japan and many people overseas? According to a recent survey of dentu Co.(電通), 8.9% said they were aware of LGBT. I do not think that everyone answered honestly. I think it's more than we imagine. Why did we make the situation? First, I noticed the law. Japanese law does not allow same-sex marriage. In addition, the distinction between men and women in Japan is judged on the basis of their natural body. So, although this is a typical example of transgender, it is not possible to immediately change gender even if you feel discomfort with your own mind, feel and your body.Furthermore, in Japan, we have long wanted to clarify the distinction between men and women, and the idea that "man is man, woman is woman" is strong. I feel that it is spurring again.
Same sex marriage
There are cases where a German woman and a Japanese woman got married by BBC News Japan.
They first thought of each other as "friends" when they first met, but later they came to think of each other as "lovers" and got married. In Germany, same-sex marriage is permitted in 2017. They decided to move to Japan, and although they have moved, it is good, but in Japan same sex marriage is not recognized. So, although they are married as a relationship of two people, on the family register they are supposed to live in the relationship of others completely. Homosexual partnership agreements are in force in some municipalities, but they are not legally binding. I doubt that this is really meaningful.
School education in Japan
When I talked each other these research with Anna in the class,She pointed out that the school education of Japan impacted this minority area. It brought me a different point of view at a point I had not noticed before. Then I examined how much I was dealing with LGBT in schooling. A group of LGBT Youth Japan, a student-centered group, conducted a questionnaire on “the status of information on homosexuality in school education” by LGBT Youth Japan.
The data presented there is more than 75% of the responses "do not handle at all". The other answer "that is a negative idea" is also 15%, and these two answers exceeded 90%. I was very shocked to see the survey.
Progress of education
A new textbook for LGBT education for elementary school children was created in 2017.
Many of the stories of people who actually live by proclaiming homosexuals are collected in the textbook. The producer says that not only the textbooks should be read by the children, but the teachers should also read them together.
Rather than imposing ideas on children unilaterally, I think teachers need to understand minorities.
3. LGBT and Another Minority
Present Condition of LGBT Refugees
In my last presentation, I focused on Japanese law development and education on LGBT people. I think that I learned to understand Japan's current situation. And this time, I changed the point of view and thought that I would try to see as people who live as minorities. Spot the refugees who are LGBT.
There are many people called "minorities" in the world. Including LGBT, people living in ethnic minorities, street children, religious followers, people with disabilities, single-parent families, etc. There are many people who are listed as minorities than we think. There is a possibility that they exist only by noticing their surroundings. This time, it is linked with the refugees that are considered to be a large number among them.I did not know that there were refugee LGBT people before I examined. I didn't think there was anything more to say. The daily life problems of people called refugees have become overrepresented. So I did not get enough to focus on such a mental part. There was nothing I could not do if I thought carefully, but it seemed disappointing that my shallow thoughts had produced stereotypes.Even so, there are few people who can say clearly that they are LGBT in the census of Japan. So there are people who are said to be refugees, and I do not know how many people have refugees LGBT. There is no doubt that you are more than you think.
Crime in Central America
It is known that in Central America it is treated quite badly. In particular, there are three countries: El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. These are countries that originally had world-class crime rates. Many people living in such places are subject to collective violence, crime and discrimination by Center For American Progress. Looking more closely, 136 LGBT refugees were evacuated from the country in 2012-2016 in El Salvador. In Honduras, 264 people were killed in 2009 -2016. Since this data is also at least a number, and there should be parts that can not be investigated, it is considered that this number is not limited to this number. This alone is a very painful fact.Furthermore, it is tempting to remember that most of these sins have not been punished. Originally, the security was not good, and although the police did not stop functioning, it seems that they did not keep up with the processing of incidents that occur like daily breakouts. Because there is such a thing, everyone wants to go north America. The UNHCR is also concerned about the decline in life expectancy of these Latin American countries and man-made reductions. I want you to be a presence that only holds as a country.
LGBT Refugees in Africa
On the other hand, there is such a country. A parade to claim LGBT rights at Kakuma Refugee Camp was held June in last year according to organization of rainbow life(レインボーライフ).
It is relatively new news. It is the first time this kind of parade has been held at a refugee camp, and I feel that we have taken a major step globally. It was supposed that about 200 people actually got together, and they handed out the Rainbow Flag as presence of LGBT. When I also saw that this became news on YouTube, I felt a very bright air with a kind of festive atmosphere. Every June is called "Pride Month" and parades are held around the world. In the first place, people living in a difficult situation may have gathered together with the same feelings. I would like to commend those who tried to do it locally. It must have been encouraging for people living in completely different environments. It is impressive that everyone involved in the video of this parade took the lead and had fun participating.
Acceptance of LGBT Refugees in Japan
Japan also had timely and big news. On the 2nd of this month, it was discovered that Japan accepted LGBT refugees according to Asahi Shinbun Desital. It seems that he accepted a person who was considered to be threatened to be persecuted in his home country because of homosexuality. It is said that homosexuality was subject to criminal punishment in his home country.Personal information has not been disclosed at all. According to the Immigration Control Agency, the person has been homosexual in his home country and has been imprisoned for two years before coming to Japan during bail. This is the case for applying for refugee status for the first time. Japan also reviewed it a bit if it finally took action. We want you to work on understanding action by opportunity this time.
Although several cases have been mentioned, it is clear that the treatment of LGBT refugees in different parts of the world is completely different. In addition, we can see that we are dealing with difficulties for understanding until now, or even in places where there was no place, we gradually change in a positive direction. I am very happy. I think that there are areas and environments where it is still difficult to live, but I think it would be better to change in stages.
4. Gender minorities and Japanese custom
In this cycle 3, I researched about gender minorities and Japanese customs. Since the first semester, focused on LGBT people mainly. However, I regarded as not LGBT people but gender minorities this time, to connect with Buddhist and Shintoism. My main question is that why changed relationships to gender minorities between Buddhism and Shintoism? I have known that the past people mainly Samurai were loved in man each other. So, we accept gender minorities gradually at last now. But why is there homosexuality in the period ? Is it that recognized ? I’m interested in this topic.
Reasons of Trend in Sengoku Period.
In conclusion, Buddhism does not accept gender minorities while it hasn’t changed since long ago. But Shintoism accepted them in a short term. The difference was made by each idea.
We focus on “toujisya”(当事者) . That’s main answer and understanding this time. In Sengoku period, many famous generals were living like we know . For example, Date Masamune, Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen and so on... It is said that they were loved with men everybody. The reason of trendy were various things. First is generals and ails lived in together, so relationship is important. Ails hope to be success in life and generals treat them with kindness. That means to be favored by generals and to reject the relationship difficultly. Two is generals and ails were couldn’t living without women while a war. They feel sad not to see their wife or women. Men wanted man to have the relationship. Last is the way to express power of unity each other. At that time, a war needed unity and good communication to win their rivals . So, they have to have better relationships. These three reason are mainly important for this issue.
Religional support for gender minorities
There is also gender minorities support currently . That is a Shouzenji (性善寺).This temple accepts gender minorities worshipers. Because the chief priest was annoying with gender identity disorder originally. So,she can understand their complex emotion and we can consult with her about our gender issues. There is only one temple which allow gender minorities apparently like this in Japan .I think that this temple play a very important roll in minority. Whether we are LGBT people or not, the present can back up for our heart. Not like this temple, I want to increase institutions for their support.
Research of in this time, I felt so hard to search correct information and way of presentation expression. There is main story in the past, I decide also to select related information.I think that Japanese people don’t recognize to gender minorities since once upon a time. Only in short time it was a period to live in easily for them. I’m glad to find the reasons of their relationship. I wonder that generals keep homosexuality relation with ails to live in the war. That is not mere men’s favor thing. I thought that if it was fashionable, I wanted it to remain until later.
5. Conclusion
Through this year, I researched about gender minorities including LGBT people. Frankly speaking, there are so many things which I don’t know and I have a prejudice unconsciously.
At present, the attitude of supporting minorities is strong even from a global perspective. I feel that we recently took a big step in accepting LGBT refugees in Japan. For gender minorities, it is desirable that legislative changes be made to create a comfortable environment. However, it is difficult to change the law suddenly realistically. I think that a stage to finally connect to the law revision is necessary. It is to speak up and take action at the private sector , non-profit organization , or individual level. In fact, a parade was held at the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, and educational textbooks for children were reviewed in Japan. I think this is one of the fine actions. I think that if people's claims for this society increase, it can have an impact.
If I didn't handle this subject in the seminar this time, it would be a lot of things I didn't know, and I would have lived in the future without knowing it. I thought about being close to them, so I wanted to get involved with them.
