Today, I talked with Jain and Chisaki first. Jain’s research and my research was similar because both included the issue which is related to disabled people. She mentioned that her main theme “disabled people’s work” may be connected with mine, “disabled people’s education”. In addition, Chisaki’s work was also related to children, it gave me some idea. While my research was on children with easily understandable barriers, hers was informative on the subject of seemingly unidentifiable children’s difficulties, such as relative poverty.
Shiori focused on children in institution, and I was surprised that the fact of them. In Japan, 里親 system is not common because people regard親権 as important.
As for my research, I focused on education for people with disabilities and people with mixed roots. I learned the former is one of the inclusive educations, but the latter is one that needs special treats. So, I decided to research them in separate and will find the way to how to treat them better in each way. The voice of them made me feel closer to them and became to take the issue more seriously.
Q. Why can’t schools be better equipped to accommodate children with disabilities?
This week, I researched more specific education in special-needs classes and schools in Japan.
As for children with foreign roots, I found the diverse example of their way of education, the special needs classes’ positive aspects. Because such classes and schools fundamentally based on providing more individually and tailored instruction, the students’ language abilities can be greatly improved. It is important to know that the reason why an academic test did not perform very well is not to be considered as having a disability, but rather that it may just be a lack of language skills.
As for children with disabilities, I focused on sex education for them and importance of support especially for mild intellectual disabilities people. I learned this case is something like “intersectionality” which is an analytical framework for understanding how aspects of a person’s social and political identities combine to create different modes if discrimination and privilege. In next week’s presentation, I’d like to summarize this cycle’s research with this issue, intersectionality.
In today’s class, I talked with Jain and thought there are connection between her research of people with disabilities’ work and their education. Thorough the discussion, I felt that it’s valuable to make their educational environment better.
Today, I gave the presentation and found that I need add some explanation between the slides to connect them. By next Thursday, I will edit the PowerPoint and make it easy to understand.
As for Tom’s presentation, I was surprised to know that “young carers” contains children not only 介護 for older family, but also taking care of younger family. I’ve rarely aware of their presence, but much more children than I thought were counted as “young carers”. I was shocked because one of the 当事者 said that he dropped out of school to take care of his family, it means he didn’t have an enough right to go to school.
As for Himika’s presentation, I learned that today’s school uniforms vary a lot to be adapted to many needs. One of the prefectural conferences unified the wears into the single design for all students, but I thought this may lead to the excessive oppression to so-called “女の子らしさ・男の子らしさ”. While society set up the comfortable environment for many people, it shouldn’t oppress such tastes. However, consideration of these borders is really obscure and difficult to say.

I was interested in やさしい日本語in Yuika’s presentation because I didn’t know that but realized how important that is. Not only in special occasions like when disaster happens, but also in daily lives, I’ll try to use them to communicate with people who may not understand what I say. In addition, I thought this can go through when I talk with children or elderly. As for Toshi’s presentation, I found some connection between his and mine. Both included treatment for people with disabilities and about their abilities. It should be really difficult to decide how much work can be assigned to them and balancing corporate profits and employments of people with disabilities. However, in discussion, we talked that the presence of people with intellectual disabilities can lighten the mood of a place and others’ minds. If more and more people realize this, employment for people with disabilities will be in great progress in whole society, I thought. As for my presentation’s discussion, we found the importance of teachers’ adequate skills for treating children.
As for the presentation itself, I need more visualized slides to make them easy to understand and attract listers in the next term.
