I learnt about the Ainu culture and Okinawa’s dialect(ウチナーグチ) from Yuka and Tom. Yuka is from Hokkaido. She was taught Ainu in elementary education. As she got older, she found this culture was known for the locals, however, it is not widely known. Also, Tom is from Okinawa prefecture. Youngers who live in Okinawa cannot speak this language and it is difficult for adults except for the elderly to speak it. Because there are no curriculums which teach them about language culture now. I do not know these cultures that much and it is impossible to convey all of them, so, I want to know what tradition to protect is and what is the value of culture.
I’m interested in LGBTQ+. In comparison with foreign countries, the understanding of them doesn't progress in Japan. I learnt there is an environment that can come out in the US from an exchange student, however, they can’t bring themselves to talk about it to anyone in Japan. I want to know why they don't admit it and what we should do to build a society in which everyone can have a good life. That’s why, I must reconsider the structure of today’s society.
A lot of fields which are the law, education, media, and government are concerned with the problem. For example, there is not the law about same-sex marriage to receive the same public services as married couples. Also, when I was a high school student, the rule of school uniform changed. Female students can wear not only skirts but also slacks. This is a good decision, but, male students can’t wear skirts. This rule is unfinished. All students should wear the school uniform you want to wear.
I should change the public opinions and social conditions. I want to learn how to change gender stereotypes in detail in the zemi.
I learnt LGBT+ was not special and they felt much more hurt than I had imagined. In Tokyo Rainbow Pride, the appearance of parading confidently gained energy and they insisted that they hoped that in the future, they could make selections as they liked. Also, there were some corporations to enhance the corporate image. I knew only the name of the company but did not learn that their concrete actions to improve the present situation are the most important things.
In particular, I was very impressed with the guest speaker from mimosa. She said “I want to live the way I want to live.” Possibly, I may deeply hurt LGBT+ s’ feeling with a casual remark but, it is essential to know it. As for Voice Up Japan, they have doubts about the custom such as charging sanitary napkins which I have never imagined. Therefore, I studied the importance of feeling a sense of doubt. Also, the key thing is to increase the opportunity to communicate with people involved for the sake of developing diversity and equality in Japan.
I am interested in how to deepen the understanding about LGBTQ+ in families, not only schools and workplaces and to make the opportunity to get through their experiences for everyone, including indifferent people
I learnt that there were much more youngers of LGBTQ+ who having been bullied and considered suicide than I expected. Respect Life White Ribbon Campaign is aim to reduce the suicide risk of LGBT youth. I was impressed by their core value, concentrating on identifying the points where they can work together instead of thinking of them as enemies or allies. It is need to follow their example for spreading knowledge about LGBTQ+. All people not only younger do not have the knowledge of gender, leading to increase the risk of suicide and bullying. Young days are important for people because of making values, that is why, the gender education in Japan should be improve.
Also, they made guidelines about gender identity to want to understand students with government, so I want to know the approach of government to develop the diversity.
I want to look at the gender education, not only the students’ but also teachers’ experience and attitude. Also, I would like to know the support from local government to make the society which everyone can be easy to live and I am interested in family which has LGBTQ+ because of learning from the guest speakers with mimosa.
I learnt the harsh reality that Gender Education did not be improved though some teachers should teach LGBT in the class and there is the gap in LGBT response among governments.
In the teachers’ questionnaire, more than the half of teachers should teach LGBT in the class, but there were a lot of teachers have not given lessons about it. The reasons why do not teach it are none-opportunities feeling the necessity of teaching, the lack of knowledge, no text books and no curriculums. To improve the situation, I should make the systems to understand them for teachers and students.
However, the government response which was important actor to improve was not enough. The Ministry of Education decided on “性同一性障害に係る児童生徒に対するきめ細やかな対応について” for teachers in 2015, promoting their attitude in LGBT youngers. It was followed by the decision; “the new study plan for the elementary school and junior high school ” in 2017 and “the new study plan for the high school student” in 2018. These plans do not contain the gender diversity. Although some teachers opposed the plan, the government refused. The reason was uncertainty, so I doubted that the scheme was not change.
Also, even if there are textbooks about LGBT, the judgement using them depend on local governments and schools and there is not always the opportunity learning gender. While, some governments were active in gender diversity. For example, in Yodogawa, there are many supports are making the websites, the leaflets for not only teachers but also parents and doctors, and so on. Such local government is a few, that is why, I’m interested in how to increase the positive local government and the public concern.
As for Yuka’s presentation, I was interested in the difference between Ainu and Indian, and knew that there were Indian’s reservations in the U.S. for the first time. In my presentation, I do not compare with other countries, so it might be easy to understand by trying that way. On the other hand, I learnt there were a restaurant and a facility about Ainu culture in Tokyo. I do not know typically the Ainu culture and I want to go to the restaurant and communication center to understand it. For discussion questions; how can we spread awareness about Ainu people, zain said that education is important to understand Ainu because she was able to feel not special for North Korea. When Tom asked Yuka what did people who is from Hokkaido feel about Ainu, Yuka said that she had knew there had been the discrimination for Ainu when she had gone to Tokyo. That is why, there were regional differences about understanding for Ainu.
Regarding Ryoko’s presentation, I learnt the relation patriarchal characteristics of marriage and the structure of society. I do not research the history about LGBT, so I would understand it if I studied. I was surprised at the bar chart which showed the proportion of agree with husbands should go out to work, and wives should protect their houses in 4 ages categories (20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59,) between 2009 and 2019. According to the graph, there were many people who agree at more than 25% in all ages. I thought equality about men and women was promoted to some extent, however, this was not. I learnt there are men and women’s gap in our awareness.
I understood that dialect is not only the way talking but also identity from Himika. I have not imagined the problem about dialect because there is not it in my hometown. It makes connection of people and pride for residents. Instead of the role such as dialect, I want to know what there is in my town. Also, I learnt the negative aspect of dialect such as the Great East Japan Earthquake. This problem is very difficult, but dialect is important to express one’s identity.
In Jain’s presentation, I learnt the difficulty for Japanese women to balance work and childcare in Japan. Regarding politics, the proportion of women political leader is low because politics image is mostly man society. Recently, in youngers, childcare and house-working are not only to do for woman, however, old people have thoughts which are a woman should be in house and a man must work outside. In Japan, there is a unique atmosphere that you should follow around, that is why, we should change it to improve the society.
As for Shiori’s presentation, we discussed what a good company to work for you was. Himika and Mina said “I would not like to work the office which discipline is strict dress code.” I agreed with them, but the looks are sometimes important to gain someone’s trust. The appropriate balance is essential.
As for Tom’s presentation, I knew that there were many different languages in Okinawa for the first time, so, standard Japanese is help with for them to understand each other, and in history, there are strict rules and discrimination. Also, I agreed with Yuka’s saying, which was that in comparison with Ainu language, Okinawa language; ウチナーグチ, was similar to dialects. Because, “ウチナーグチ” is known for Japanese more than Ainu language, and Ainu culture is mixed with Japanese culture. In the chart which shows the understanding about “しまくとぅば” for the citizen of Okinawa prefecture, the proportion of being able to communicate generally is higher in forties than I had expected. All residents should be proud of own language more and more to save them.
In terms of Toshi’s PowerPoint, I was interested in the difference between Japan and the US about the image of homosexuality. I understood the importance of the media to know them, and then Ryoko emphasized the difficulty of informing Japanese of homosexuality, because this was one of genres in Japan and special. I had sympathy for her.
Regarding Chisaki’s announcement, I learnt the necessities of changing womens’ consciousnesses and the social roles. Although I am apt to focus on women in gender bias, I need to discuss the sight of men. Also, I easy to understand the theme by using visual aid.
