Poverty & Inequality for children

Why did I get interested in this problem?

My mother is a social worker. I often listen to her stories. Then, I learned about problem of child poverty. For example, they can't go to school, they can't live with their family, they can't eat well, and so on. I haven't know that there is such problem in Japan, and I thought "poverty" is existing in only developing countries. I was surprised "poverty" is exists in Japan as well. I thought that this problem is so serious and we have to solve it.

Present Situation - Child Poverty Rate

子供の貧困率：貧困ライン以下のレベルの生活を送る17歳以下の子供の割合

貧困ライン：国民の可処分所得の中央値の半分の所得の家庭

The child poverty rate is increasing.

2 types of poverty

1] Absolute Poverty - 絶対的貧困

difficult to secure food, clothing, shelter

found in developing countries

2] Relative Poverty - 相対的貧困

衣食住はギリギリ満たせる、貧困ライン以下

found in developed countries

She is 12-years-old. She lives in poverty with her mother. Her father is a drug addict, divorced from her mother. She was bullied for being poor and father less and she dropped out of school.

Single mother ⇨⇨⇨tend to suffer from poverty

?WHY?

1] traditionally in Japan → men work, women stay home to take care of children

62% of women drop out the workplace when they have their first child. However, 77% of women want to rejoin the workplace after leaving it to raise a child. In fact, only 43% of women can to rejoin the workplace.

2] Men tend not to support raising their children

Only 20% of divorced mothers receive child support. The process is very difficult. It is a problem.
